The Chronicle newspaper, was originally set up by former Wangaratta Mayor, George Maxwell in 1861, then later purchased by Sir John Bowser, colorful figure of the last century and later Premier, when he took over the paper, then called the "Chronicle,". Mr. W.T. Bill Higgins then purchased The Wangaratta Despatch in 1921 and Wangaratta Chronicle in 1937.
The company is still owned by the Higgins family and managed by Edward Higgins, a fourth generation family member. There are over 60 people employed directly in the north east and another 50 by associated Provincial Press Group companies. Sponsorship and media support of communities and events are part of our business aims.
