Grand Final

                 2008  Olympic Premiers

The Alexandra Football / Netball Club culminated a successful season with three premierships at Woori Yallock last Saturday Sept 13th . The Senior side defeated arch rivals Thornton – Eildon 13.8 to 10.12 whilst the Reserves were far too strong for Yarra Glen winning by 56 points 15.6 to 5.10.   In the netball the B grade side had a comfortable win 52/27 win over Thornton -  Eildon whilst the A grade team lost narrowly 26/29 to the same club. The Under 18s also made the finals to finish fourth. These fine performances ensured that the club won the League’s Champion Club award.

The Seniors who had never previously won at the Woori-Yallock ground turned around a 33 point loss in the second semi to win by 14 points in a tight finish. Alexandra had to defend a 15 point lead that they had built up during the third quarter against last years premier and a strong gusty wind. All players played their part with Marcus Hill winning the League’s  Best on Ground award. Young forward Brayden Norris was the Rebel’s leading goal kicker with 4.

Alexandra have won premierships in seven Olympic years  ’52,’56, ’60, ’80,’88,2000 and now 2008 along with other wins in ’62 and ’97.

The Reserves after winning by a point in the second semi to go straight to the grand final were far too good for Yarra Glen who surprised most pundits by beating Belgrave in the preliminary final. The Reserves led by Steven Hedger now have won successive premierships, a feat not previously known to be achieved by any Alexandra team at open age level.   Defender Dan Crane was a worthy winner of the League medal for B o G,  whilst reserves leading goal kicker Chris McKay kicked 5 goals in a team effort.

The Club also had a great season in netball with all five netball teams making the Grand Finals of their respective competitions with the Under 12s and A Grade,  runners up whilst the Under 14s, 16, and B grade were Premiers.

Congratulations to Coaches, Players, Team Officials and all who have contributed to the Clubs most successful season ever.
