Under 18s

The Under 18s took to the ground with 16 and one on the interchange thanks to two under 16s helping out, a strong consistent breeze from the Warburton Highway side blowing directly down the ground.   Great play in the first 5 minutes was impressive with Kurt Veldman scoring from a set shot.   Gembrook kept up the pressure and Ben Cooper took a great mark despite Gembrook’s best efforts to zone him out.   The Ward/Veldman combination provided another goal from a set shot with a substantial cross breeze.   Jason Shaw, Ben Cooper, and Sam Woollard all demonstrated strong tackling.   Matt Steiner made his presence felt with another goal in the last five minutes of the quarter, Alexandra 3.1.19 to Gembrook Cockatoo 4.2.26 at the first change.   After the short break the Rebels had the wind behind them and the pace of the game quickened, Bart Wallace took a great leap and mark and kept the ball moving in the right direction.   Rhys Steward positioned well and marked, kicking from 35 metres the wind was fickle and curved the ball around to go through for a point.   Kurt Veldman using the set shot technique added another goal to the score but the Rebels trailed 4.4.28 to Gembrook Cockatoo 7.10.52.   The last time Alexandra met Gembrook Cockatoo the half time scores had Alexandra trailing by 54 points.   Third quarter started with the wind in Gembrook Cockatoo’s favour, intense pressure from the first bounce.   An entertaining passage of play was Jaye Rogerson’s kick across the goal square to Matt Steiner who valiantly attempted to goal from 40 metres, normally a shoe in, the wind carried the ball away from the big sticks.   Nick Malcolm tapped the ball twice to clear it from the pack to Matt Steiner who scored.   Grant Halligan came off the field with a niggling muscle strain, Alexandra 5.6.36 to Gembrook Cockatoo 12.14.86 at the last break.   The fourth quarter provided fairly lack lustre play but the Alex team kept their heads up and legs moving for the final 20 minutes.   Strong tackling by Jaye Rogerson in front of the coach’s box personified the Rebels’ don’t give up attitude the boys have had all season.   Two attempts at the goal posts finally ended up with Sam Woollard kicking for a goal from a set shot.   The final goal from the season came from Jeremy Ward collected from a forward pass, Alexandra 7.9.51 to Gembrook Cockatoo 13.15.93.   This was a tough season for the Under 18s having moved up a division but a great experience for the boys who worked hard all season week in week out.   It was tremendous to see the support and advice from George, Bretho, Roger, Kenny, Dylan and Lauren.   Goal Kickers:  Kurt Veldman 3, Matthew Steiner 2, Jeremy Ward and Sam Woollard 1 each.   Awards:  Round the Corner – Matthew Steiner, North East Tyres – Nick Malcolm, Parkside Video – Ben Cooper, Millers Mensland – Rhys Steward, Burnsies Pizza – Jake Steyger, Trainers award – Sam Woollard.
