Alexandra Football/Netball Club – SDJF/NL

Sunday, September 6th, 2009

The Alexandra Football/Netball Club travelled to Avenel last Sunday for the Grand Finals of the Seymour District Junior Football/Netball League 2009 Season. The Club was represented by the Under 14s and Under 16s netball, together with the Under 14s football with all three teams taking on their respective opposition from St.Marys.

The Under 14s football, despite training well during the week, could not get into the game and were behind on the scoreboard early in the first quarter and were unable to catch up as the game progressed, St.Marys extending their lead to a match winning margin by three quarter time. Well done to all the players on a great year, to Coach Paul Wallis, team manager Rick Sanders, runner Leo Smedley and all the parents that have helped out during the year to ensure the players all enjoyed the experience.

The under 14s netball enjoyed a close game with St.Marys, nothing in it until the last couple of minutes when the Rebels put their skirts in front and ended up with a four goal win at the final siren. All the girls played well and have worked hard all year, well done to coach Lucy Wallis on a great year.

The Under 16s netball started slowly and were well down at the first break, St.Marys extending their lead to double figures early in the second quarter before the Rebels got their game going. The Rebels kept chipping away and in a tense last quarter the scoreboard kept ticking over with the margin getting smaller, the match all tied up at the last bell. An extra five minutes each way ensured the girls were going to sleep well but St.Marys was able to hold on and record a win by two goals at the end of extra time. Again, well done to all the girls, coach Maggie Hamill and all the parents for their help during the year.

Another important function to remember is the Alexandra Football/Netball Club Presentation Night for all Under 12, Under 14 and Under 16 football and netball teams to be held at the Club rooms, starting at 6.00 p.m. on Friday, 11th September. Entry is free and everyone is welcome.
