Reserves

The Reserves welcomed Nick Armstrong, James Fulton, Michael Heyes, Nick Malcolm and Kurt Veldman replacing Shenton Clarke, David Heard, Alun Matthews, Kyall Norris, Chris Wallis and Sam Woollard.   Despite winning the toss and kicking with the wind the Rebels had to start the game with 17 players, thereby negating the advantage.   The home side were quickly into attack and put the Alexandra defence under pressure, Dan Crane and Justin Leary started well for the Rebels but the visitors struggled up forward.   Reinforcements, in the name of Under 18 players who had been playing at Wandin, arrived at quarter time and Alexandra were now able to go man on man and a much better second quarter resulted.   The third quarter was Alexandra’s best as they more than matched it with the home side.   Andrew Russell was in great form and put the Rebels into attack on numerous occasions for goals to David Oakley, who rucked tirelessly all game, Michael Heyes who was obviously carrying an injury and Brian Heard.   Alexandra continued the effort into the last quarter and despite the score line, matched it with the Silvan Cats.   The Russell brothers, Andrew and Lucas, Tom Dunell, Grant Miller and Nick Armstrong won many possessions and goals to Wood and another to Heyes gave the scoreboard some respectability, 6.8 to 13.13.   The Reserves are to be congratulated on their efforts over a difficult season, with the help of Under 18s who hopefully will benefit from the experience and the dedication of players like Hayden Nichol, Justin Leary, Steven Parker, Michael Mawson and others were able to fulfil the Club’s commitment each week.   Also the efforts of coach, Brad Kidd who had a most difficult task with at least a third of the team changing each week, must be applauded.   Awards:  Shamrock Hotel meal – Andrew Russell, Mt.Pleasant Hotel meal – Nick Armstrong, Commercial Hotel meal – David Oakley, Commercial Hotel stubbies – Michael Mawson.
