For
much of the 1970's the football for Upwey was disappointing. A couple of the
seasons saw us missing the finals and, although we were producing in the main
very competitive teams, success in the finals continued to elude the teams.
Until finally, in 1978, all the hard work was rewarded. The Senior team's
premiership win that year was the first of a hat trick of flags, the first
time that this had happened in the League. In addition, the '78 team was
undefeated throughout that season, yet another first in the League, and their
Grand Final score of 26.18.174 and the winning margin of 99 points were both
record highs. The Reserve team also joined in the record making. The team won
the 1977 premiership and would go on to win the next four flags to make it
five in a row. Along the way they would at one stage notch up 53 wins in a
row.
