UFTG Vets
Vets sign off debut season in style
The history-making, first time ever Upper Gully Veterans finished off their debut season in style, pushing finalists Bayswater all the way, in the game moved to Dobsons Reserve. With a luxury of riches this round (some would say "for once!"), Upper found itself with a coach, runner, trainer and a full bench of 5 super fit veteran footballers, keen to finish their season with a bang. Coach Dave Leathem found himself having to earn this money this week, having some actual options on the bench to think through and more name magnets than he could poke a stick at. Welcome aboard to Steven Sturt who made his debut, bringing the total players to represent the side over the season to 38. Makes you wonder how we only had 16 available on occasions, a point not lost on skipper Michael Scoon! Upper got off to a flyer, following a quick clearance forward to Jason Zinnow to score the opener and send a shock to the Bayswater side. Zinnow had another excellent game, kicking 3 goals on the day. At quarter time there was nothing in it and Upper had a sniff. Big Andrew Derksen went forward in the second quarter for spell from ruck duties and found himself with a swag of scoring opportunities, kicking two (and should have had three!). Around the packs, the little blokes were getting busy, including Greg Blundell, Heath Wilson, Zinnow, Jared Lawson, Andy Hayman, Brad Smith, Andy Lee etc. The scores were locked at 4.6 apiece at half-time and the upset was well and truly on. Down back Steve Phillips was putting his body on the line and providing a physical contest at every available opportunity. Greg Moorhouse had another ripper game as did Jeff Franken, both linking up with some clever handballs and good running, showing the benefit of being regular trainers. The third quarter was more of the same, with further goals from Zinnow and Jimmy Weir, who now has the distinction of scoring the Vets first and last goals of the season (one for the trivia buffs to remember in future!). At three quarter time we held a one goal lead and the mood in the huddle was one of hope and optimism. Would they get to sing the song for only the third time this year? Sadly - no was the short answer as Bayswater figured out that if they wanted to play finals next round they'd better start looking like a finals side. Baysie ran out winners by 11 points over a brave Upper Gully. In the rooms after the match, Scoony thanked Greg Blundell for his organising skills in getting the side on the park each week and also the club for supporting the team and making it happen. He thanked the boys for their efforts and made the point that if we had the numbers available each week then the side was more than capable of pulling off some good results. In summary you'd have to say the inaugural season was a success, providing a heap of blokes the chance to have a kick with their mates each week and a beer and a meal on a Thursday as part of the mighty Upper Gully Football Club. Well played gentlemen. Pictures from the game can be found here. Anyone interested in playing next year please contact Greg Blundell on 0412 671 135 for more info.
