Despite dire warnings of rain, Bernie Welland, president, and his mates from the Wagin Bowling Club undertook the two hour drive to enjoy the annual City vs Country Challenge against our Gosnells Bowling Club.
The weather fairies were kind to us and the games were played under a sunny day with much passing cloud.
At lunch time, we were treated to a tasty bowl of lentil and vegetable soup followed by a huge roll filled with either pork, beef or lamb of your choice. The Kitchen Angels, Trish, Leslie, Dorothy and Gloria served and fussed around us like our own mums . . .
After the games we all sat down (well, most of us) to a smorgasbord of sandwiches, spring rolls with a delicious dip, baby pies and frothy cream sponge cake slices.
Men’s Captain Rod Nash started the speeches with acknowledging the number of thanks to be made and asked us to ‘bear with’ him until he thanked everybody - although not individually for fear of missing people out. He began with thanks to the ladies (Kitchen Angels) amid hearty applause followed by thanks to the Bar Staff (more hearty applause) and promised a large kiss to Mavis for running the raffle.
The prize for the highest score against a Wagin team went to Rocco Saffioti’s crew of 13 - 3.
The Perpetual Trophy however, changed hands this year as Gosnells was pronounced the winner with 13 points and 71 shots up against Wagin’s score of 8 points with 44 shots up. Well done Gosnells BC.
At this point, Bernie Welland stood up and declared his and Wagin’s enjoyment of the games, hospitality and friendship between our two clubs, and reluctantly handed over the trophy for Gosnells’ safe keeping for the next 12 months.
Images of this event will be available for viewing in the Photo Gallery in the next 24 hours or so.
