The Grand View Hotel Bayside Bombers continued their unbeaten 2011 season with a 84 point thrashing of arch rivals Morningside at Wynnum last Sunday.
With Russell Crowe winning the toss and kicking with the aid a small breeze, this game was going to test the Bombers who in recent years had not beaten the Morningside Panthers, but this game was all but over at quarter time with the Baysiders opening up with a 6 goal to one opening term, shutting down Morningside all over the park. Centre clearances were all won by the Bombers with Mike Tait and Benny Rogers on fire early, Clinton Dunning ( 3 goals) and Dukes Smith ( 4 goals) did the rest up forward as the freight train that the Bombers have become this season continues to collect scalps of the opposition.
The onball brigade of Tait, Ada Roberts, Casper Kath and Rogers were being fed the ball from Sully Bagnall like free beer at the GV as the Bombers dominated the game from the clearances and rebounded from defence like a trampoline, Crowe, Tim White and Brad Carr prominent in the second quarter as the lead was extended at the long break to 52 points.
The Bombers not happy with the lead were looking for 3 years of revenge against the hapless panthers who were had had enough by this stage, only for Coach Tait to rotate the team around so all could have a piece of the pie. Carlo Archille again must have had another feed of garlic as he was left alone all day to gather uncontested disposals feeding the forwards plenty of footy. Brett Knight was prominent up the field as was big Simon Groves when given a run in the ruck, and will be better for it as the seasons end draws near. Bombers stretched the lead to 79 points.
The last quarter finish could not come quick enough for Morningside, but they fought to the end dominating possession, but unable to convert opportunities, where the Bombers could, outscoring the opposition by 5 points. The Bombers again won another quarter in a all round brilliant display. Sam French and Geoff Buzwell continued to rack up contested possessions with strong bullocking football driving the ball into the Bombers forward line, Morningside finished strong as the Bombers took their foot of the gas to run out comfortable 84 point victors. “ A sweet win today against the panthers, they have had the wood on us for a few years, but not today”, “ We have had our structures set for the last 5-6 games and we have it down pat now, defence, onball and attack, we are cherry ripe”, coach Tait said after the game.
The Bombers have now won 10 straight and with Aspley next week, and Moorooka in the last game, all looks good for a loss less year, a far cry from a winless year had by the Bombers just 6 years ago.
The Bombers will play Aspley this Saturday night at Aspley at 4.30pm, which will be coach Mike Taits last game for the Bombers before he leaves for Tasmania. Tait has been a stalwart for the Bombers over the last 7-8 years winning all bar 2 best and fairest awards as well as coaching for the last 3 seasons. Tait will be sorely missed as he has been one of the lifebloods for the Bayside Bombers masters over his duration. The Bayside Bombers committee will be shortlisting the coaching position at season’s end, but with big shoes to fill, the incumbent looks to be on a hiding to nothing.
