GREEN SHIRT

If you see Officials and Umpires wearing this shirt then it's important for you to know that they are beginners.

As with any ‘learner’ they may make mistakes. Give them a chance to develop their skills without harassment and abuse. They are doing their best.

Be helpful and give constructive feedback to your sport via the correct channels.

Help us to help you by supporting our officials and umpires.

Aims of the Green Shirt Program

  • Make new officials easily identifiable, so that they are easy to recognise and support
  • Promote this program to the sports community to raise awareness and increase the recognition and support of new officials
  • Assist in reducing pressure and lessening abuse and conflict directed towards new officials
  • Create a culture of support towards these new officials via the education of players, spectators, coaches and the media about Codes of Conduct, Play By The Rules, Sideline Rage and Sport Rage
CODES OF CONDUCT

Players - Codes of Behaviour
Play by the rules.

  • Never argue with an official. If you need clarification, have your captain, coach or manager approach the official during a break or after the competition.
  • Work equally hard for yourself and your team. Your team’s performance will benefit and so will you.
  • Be a good sport. Applaud all good plays whether they are made by your team or the opposition.
  • Show respect to and acknowledge opponents and officials (e.g. shake hands before and after the game and say things like ‘good luck’, ‘thanks for the game’, ‘thanks ref’, ‘three cheers for ...’).*
  • Cooperate with your coach, team mates and opponents. Without them there would be no competition.
  • Participate for your own enjoyment and benefit, not just to please parents and coaches.
  • Play fair - no verbal abuse of officials, sledging other players (including vilification) or deliberately distracting or provoking an opponent.
  • Respect the rights, dignity and worth of all participants regardless of their gender, ability, cultural background or religion.

Parents and Spectators - Codes of Behaviour

Children participate in sport for their enjoyment, not yours.

  • Encourage children always to play according to the rules and to settle disagreements without resorting to hostility or violence.
  • Never ridicule or yell at a child for making a mistake or not winning.
  • Respect officials’ decisions and encourage children to do likewise.
  • Show appreciation for volunteer coaches, officials and administrators.
  • Applaud good performance and efforts from all individuals and teams. Congratulate all participants, regardless of the game’s outcome.
  • Condemn the use of violence, verbal abuse or vilification in any form, whether it is by spectators, coaches, officials or players.
  • Support policy and practices (and lead by example) in relation to responsible use of alcohol, to child protection issues and to issues involving recreational and performance enhancing drugs.*
  • Support involvement in modified rules games and other junior development programs.*
  • Respect the rights, dignity and worth of every young person regardless of their gender, ability, cultural background or religion.

Officials - Codes of Behaviour
Apply rules and regulations to match the skill levels and needs of young people and to make participation more fun.

  • Compliment and encourage all participants. You are a role model and a source of a young person’s confidence building.
  • Be consistent, objective and courteous when making decisions.
  • Condemn unsporting behaviour and promote respect for all opponents
  • Keep up to date with the latest trends in officiating and the principles of growth and development of young people.
  • Place the safety and welfare of the participants above all else.
  • Be familiar with and know your role in relevant sport safety policies and practices.
  • Promote a culturally appropriate environment.
  • Implement policy and practices (and lead by example) in relation to responsible use of alcohol, to child protection issues and to issues involving recreational and performance enhancing drugs.
  • Ensure that equipment and facilities meet safety standards and are appropriate to the age and ability of all players.
  • Respect the rights, dignity and worth of all participants regardless of their gender, ability, cultural background or religion.
