Epic shoot-out win sends Bayswater into final

Bayswater City coach Chris Coyne revealed that a half-time pep talk to his players was the catalyst for a dramatic comeback and eventual penalty shoot-out win against a spirited Armadale in their Night Series semi-final at Litis Stadium on Saturday evening.

Last year’s pre-season runner-up had to battle back from a two-goal half-time deficit to draw level at 2-2 before agonisingly missing a host of late chances that would have prevented a second shoot-out in as many weeks.

19-year-old Armadale midfielder Callum Potton was the only player to miss his spot-kick as Bayswater triumphed 7-6 on a night where Coyne was disappointed with his team’s first-half display.

“I said to them (there was) no footballer who could just turn up and win a game,” Coyne said.

“You have to earn the right to win football games – you have to roll your sleeves up, you have to be prepared to fight.

“At the end of the day I thought we had a bit more quality when we did go forward in the second half but you cannot give good teams a two-goal head start.”

Bayswater will face newly-promoted Cockburn City in next Saturday’s Night Series final at Macedonia Park after the Cockerels upset Perth SC 2-1 in the late game.

City had former Balcatta hit-man Steven Burton to thank for two second-half goals that dragged his side back into a game which saw Armadale hit the lead through the impressive Jack Salter before the latter set up Callum Barry for a sucker-punch goal right on half-time.

It was Armadale that started the brighter –first Barry, then Salter both unsuccessfully testing Bayswater custodian Gianni Papalia from long-range.

It took 24 minutes for Bayswater’s first chance to eventuate and it fell to Brian Farrell who shot straight at Armadale ‘keeper Cyril Sharrock from a poor free-kick.

The game’s best opportunity for a breakthrough goal came just three minutes later when Burton smashed his shot against the crossbar following good link-up play with the lively Patrick Quinn.

So it was slightly against the run of play that Armadale opened the scoring on 41 minutes when Rhys Loxley’s pin-point corner found the head of Salter who powered the ball home in what was almost certainly a training ground drill.

Salter was in the thick of things again deep into first-half stoppage time when he guided Louie Bake’s mishit shot goal wards, allowing Barry to prod home from less than a metre out and send the Armadale supporters into raptures.

But Coyne’s rallying cry seemed to have paid some dividends as less than two minutes after the interval Burton poked home, despite Sharrock saving brilliantly from Gustavo Catarcione’s powerful header.

The Armadale goalkeeper then went from hero to villain, inexplicably dropping Paul McCarthy’s tame effort straight into the path of Burton who tapped in once more to level things at the midway mark of the second half.

Bayswater seized the initiative and finished the stronger but was unable to find a winner with second-half substitute Hassan Al Yassir coming closest, hitting the post after rounding Sharrock late on.

Coyne then watched from the sidelines as his troops held on for another sudden-death win on penalties – the first-year coach not phased at facing Cockburn next week with several first-team players either injured or absent for various reasons.

“We have a lot of faith in the players we have got – I don’t mind making changes in the pre-season,” he said.

“A game is a game – the ball is in the middle and the goal posts don’t move.

“You have to go out and beat whatever is in front of you.”
