Salter signs off with a goal

Armadale striker Jack Salter scored the equaliser in his final game of the season against Inglewood United at Alfred Skeet Reserve as the sides drew 1-1.

“I’ve got some family stuff going on back in New Zealand, so I’m moving back there for the rest of the year,” he said.

“It has been a pleasure playing with the boys and it’s sad to go but family comes first.”

Salter was coy on what the future holds.

“I change my mind pretty often, but I’ll be going home and seeing the family then I’ll decide in a few months time.”

Inglewood took the lead in the 20th minute through a Craig Simpson tap-in at the back post after Armadale failed to clear their lines from a free kick.

It should have been the second for the away side after the speedy Alex Caniglia hit the crossbar from five yards out when he met a cross at the back post in the ninth minute.

Inglewood continued to dominate the opening period and the frustration from the home side came to a head in the 38th minute.

A poor tackle from Inglewood player Matt Danskin on Sam Loveless provoked a reaction from the Armadale full back, who then forcefully pushed his opponent over and continued to stand over the player after he went to ground.

Both players were given cautions, much to the surprise of Inglewood coach Graham Normanton.

“It should have been a red card, no doubt about it. Referee’s seen it, linesman has seen it, why isn’t it a red card?”

Possibly being the catalyst for an Armadale revival, the home side came out of the second half break much more solid and looked the more dangerous side.

Salter’s goal was scored with 16 minutes to play after substitute David Perich was caught in possession facing his own goal, and the ball found its way to Salter at the far post.

Normanton was left scratching his head after seeing his side not capitalise on a strong first half performance.

“It was like we were Jekyll and Hyde and there can’t be that much disparity between our best and worst football,” he said.

“When you’re playing your best football, you have to capitalise. We had seven or eight gilt edged chances and we only scored one, so it’s not good enough.”

Armadale coach Lee Bamber has noticed a change in mentality from his young side over the past month.

“We’re a bit stronger now; we’ve got a bit of character, a bit of belief about the team,” he said.

“Three weeks ago if we’d have gone one nil down our heads would’ve gone down and the floodgates would’ve opened, but there’s a lot more belief in the team now.”
