Rules for Parents and/or Volunteer Officials

THE OFFSIDE RULE

A player is in an offside position, when, within the opponent’s half, he finds himself behind the last opposing defender (hence between the other team’s keeper and last defender) at the moment the ball is played to him (not when the ball reaches him, but when the ball is actually played/sent to him or in his direction).

A player is in an offside position if they are nearer to the opposition's goal line than both the ball and the second last opponent.

You can't be offside if:

  • You receive the ball directly from a goal kick, a throw-in or a corner
  • You are in your own half of the pitch
  • You are level with the second last or last two opponent

You will notice that in theory, the referee doesn’t call an offside position, if the ball is not played to the player in the offside position; hence, the play will only get whistled down, if the player in the offside position influences the play. Furthermore, you will also notice that the referee may seem to make late calls. This is due to a new variance of the rule, where the referee and his assistants only flag the offside when the player in the offside position is actually involved in the play.

Still confused?......
