HCJBC History

Let the story begin .......

In setting up the new Hoppers Crossing Junior Basketball Club website, it would be fantastic if we could create an historical page dating back to the establishment of the club in late 1980.

If you have any documents or information on the Hoppers Crossing basketball club, please past it on to our committee members or email us at hoppersbc@hotmail.com

As we start gather information on to establish of our orgins, we will be listing some facts along the way. These facts will then become part of our story of where we come from and where we are today.

FACTS

1980

  • The Werribee Junior Amateur Basketball Assosication (WJABA) was officially opened on Saturday 4th October 1980, with Mr Barry Jones, MHR, throwing the first ball signalling the commencement of the junior competition.
  • Hoppers Crossing Junior Basketball Club was one of three present day clubs participating in the first round of the WJABA competition. The other two clubs were St Peters and Iramoo.
  • There were other clubs/teams present at the opening of the WJABA competition, they were Woodville Saints, Epson Rovers, Duffers, Werribee Imperials, Werribee Tech and Weedons Warriors.
  • Our first Hoppers teams to compete in the U12 and U14 mixed competitions were Hoppers Tigers and Hoppers Kittens. Our two teams competed in the U12 age group and both loss their opening round matches; Hoppers Tigers defeated by St Peters Eagles and Hoppers Kittens defeated by Woodville Saints.
  • Werribee Devils, as they are known today had been competing at the junior level prior to the establishment of the WJABA. Junior Werribee teams were playing at venues such as Footscray YMCA, Melton and Sunbury from 1978.
  • When the WJABA was established a decision was made to have the best players in the competition, compete under the banner of Werribee All Stars
  • Hoppers Tigers and Hoppers Kittens were lucky enough to have had several players, previously playing for Werribee prior to the commencement of the WJABA and then as part of the Werribee All Stars. Those players included both Cameron Beecroft and Mark Beecroft.
