Under 8 to 11 Small Sided Information

Phase 3 – Small Sided Taringa Rovers In-House Social Program:

Age Group:

•           U8   -    7 and 8 year old boys and girls.

Program Purpose:

To provide 7 and 8 year old children a controlled and enjoyable introduction to training for and playing football in a team environment at a familiar location amongst friend to learn the basic football, teamwork and fair play skills required to participate in interclub small sided football from the age of 7 onwards.

Reason for the Program:

The Small Sided Taringa Rovers Hub Program was established in 2007 in conjunction with the FFA introduction of small sided football and as result of Taringa Rovers being in a position to field sufficient teams within the U8 age groups to form either a solely Taringa rovers competition or where required a competition which included teams from other smaller local clubs such as Toowong Soccer Club.

The Small Sided Taringa Rovers Hub Program is run wholly consistent with directives from FFA in regard to Small Sided Football.

To provide a progression path of coaching knowledge for junior coaches from the managed training sessions in U6 and U7 to planning and implementing their own training sessions in U8.

Program Structure:

The full Small Sided Taringa Rovers Hub Program is a 20 week program run throughout the regular football season from Mid-April until the End of August excluding school holidays. In the Under 8 Program coaches are enabled to run separate weekly training sessions with their teams, utilising the knowledge gained from the U6 & U7 Player and Coach Development Program and prepare and manage their team for Saturday morning games.

Program Future Now and Beyond:

The Small Sided Taringa Rovers Hub Program has proved a very successful program in terms of both participation numbers and football development for local young children. The Small Sided Taringa Rovers Hub Program will form the basis for our transition from centrally managed coaching to individual coaching for small sided football.

Phase 4 – Small Sided - Brisbane Wide - Graded Competition:

Age Group:

•            U9 to U11   -    8 to 11 year old boys and girls.

Program Purpose:

To provide 9 to 11 year old children an opportunity to play football with teams and in a competition which best matches their individual abilities.

Reason for the Program:

The Small Sided Taringa Graded Competition was established in 2007 in conjunction with the FFA introduction of small sided.

Program Structure:

At U9 level, given that it is the first year of grading applying to teams, in order to make the transition as easy as possible, players are given the opportunity to stay with their team from the previous year and play in a grade that suit the level of the team as a whole, or to be individually graded and play within a team of similarly skilled players.

At U10 and U11, players are graded individually based on their abilities into either of the three Football Brisbane divisions. Players are strongly encouraged by the club to play in the grade that best suits, *except in exceptional circumstances their abilities at these age groups, however no player is forced to play in any particular grade at the expense of their enjoyment of playing football with their friends.

*An example of exceptional circumstances has occurred in 2015, where there was an opportunity to field a full girl’s team. As a whole the girls team is best suited to the Goana division, however some girls individually could play at higher levels, however if they decided they wished to be part of the girls team, this was allowed. Importantly, despite the formation of this all girls team, we still have several girls playing in mixed Komodo Dragons and Goanna teams this year.

The Small Sided Taringa Graded Competition is a 20 week program run throughout the regular football season from Mid-April until the End of August excluding school holidays. The program provides for one training session per week, plus weekly games.

Additional training through the skill development program may be available for small sided players subject to field availability and an agreement by the individual player to pay an additional fee to cover the additional ground rental, lights and coaching.

The Coaches in the teams Small Sided Taringa Graded Competition are drawn from a combination of suitably experienced parent coaches and senior players. All coaches of the teams in the Small Sided Taringa Graded Competition are provided with the opportunity to obtain a Junior Coaching Licence, with costs covered by Taringa Rovers.

Program Future Now and Beyond:

The Small Sided Taringa Graded Competition has proved a very successful program in terms of both participation numbers and football development for local young children.

The Small Sided Taringa Graded Competition will look to develop it’s Individual Skill Development Component further, as the basis for providing talented and motivated players with the opportunities to develop their abilities under qualified coaches in a specially developed program following the National Curriculum.
