The Grange Royals Hockey Club Mission!
The Grange Royals Hockey Club has a proud history stretching back as far as 1931. Our club is a very social, family oriented club with a great spirit.
Our mission: To be the best we can be and enjoy the fellowship of our team mates and supporters on and off the field.
Our vision: To promote sport of hockey and add to the Grange Royals tradition with great hockey, many premierships and even greater times shared with our many friends on Saturday nights at the Club
HISTORY:
The Grange Men's Hockey Club was formed in 1931 as the result of efforts by Hartleigh Kelly over the summer of 1930-31, to get at least 12 of the Grange district interested in playing hockey. And so a team was fielded in the second division for the 1931 season. The uniform would be a grey shirt with red facings, white shorts and grey socks with red tops (maroon was not a term used in those days). At the end of the minor round, Grange topped the premiership table with 25 points having played 15 games, winning 12, 1 draw, and losing 2, with 64 goals for and 29 against. They played against Blackwood for the flag. This game was drawn, even after another two full halves, and was replayed. The replay, plus extra time, again resulted in a drawn game and the teams were declared joint Premiers. Since then the men have gone on to win 28 Division 1 men's premierships. In the 22 years between 1937 and 1959 the club won 19 men's premierships, a record that is unlikely to be achieved again.
In 1975 (the International Women's Year) the club at the instigation of an enthusiastic group of female players moved to include women's teams as part of the club, and the name was changed to the Grange Hockey Club Inc. In 1988 the club membership voted on a motion to amalgamate with the members of Royal Park Hockey Club, a move that was mutually benificial to both clubs, and rename themselves Grange Royals Hockey Club Inc (or GRHC). Since the amalgamation the men have won two premierships and the women five, with the most memorable being the double header in 1999.
Since the early eighties the club has for many years maintained a very strong family atmosphere, and during the season the Saturday night meals have been a drawing card for players, their families and friends. This was a timely innovation as it started during the period of the introduction of the synthetic turf pitches that saw the advent of night hockey games. Clubs that invested in turf pitches have had to forego their traditional Saturday night club activities, and Grange Royals are left as probably the only club to provide this now unique hockey based activity. One of the great benefits of this activity is the bringing together of the surviving originals and our new generations of young juniors.
In 2008 we will field five senior men's teams including veterans, four senior women's teams, one junior girls, three junior boys and three mixed teams. The growth in our junior ranks, including a growing number of country players' augers well for the club in the future.
