1st grade v Wollongong
Round 3 25 April 2009
Village Green
Brad Abbott
It was a successful round 3 for the Bulldogs with wins in all 4 grades. Unfortunately, the under 18s couldn't get over the line, narrowly going down in a hard fought contest.
In first grade, the Dogs had a big 20 goal win, with the rejuvenated Leigh Lavery continuing his good form, kicking 6 goals. Despite being benched at the start of the 4th quarter, the physio team worked hard to dry his eyes, pick up his bottom lip and find his dummy and Lavery was able to come back on and finish off a good game. After the match, Lavery gave credit to '2008 SFL Coach of the Year' (Trademark) Terry Mudge's pre-game speech. Despite vowing during the week not to mention the ANZACs, Mudge's 25 minute ANZAC story was pure motivational genius and yet another example of Mudge operating on a different level to other coaches.
Lavery was ably supported by Ben Woods and Sam 'mule' Rutland. After starring in round 2, Peter 'One Game Wonder' Kefalas crashed back to Earth and was hardly sighted. Surprisingly, Kefalas again polled well in the player's player voting, perhaps shedding some light on his over-enthusiasm to collect the players' votes. Whilst not implying any guilt in the matter, let me just say that voting for yourself is one thing, but changing others' votes to yourself is an entirely different matter altogether.
The club would like to thank all those volunteers that ran the 2-up at the Doncaster Hotel throughout the day, but the biggest thank you of all goes to supercoach Mudge for not turning up.
