Round 5 - Springwood v Mayne 12/5/12
Seniors
Last Saturday saw Springwood’s Seniors take a Mayne Tigers squad which was fairly unknown to us due to their off-season recruits. Whilst they have seen improvement this season, we came into the clash feeling that we would be able to produce a win with the blokes really wanting to get out there and get back to playing good football. The first quarter saw this happen and both teams came out hard with Springwood controlling a large chunk of the first quarter. While we could have lead by a couple of goals for the term, we weren’t able to convert all our opportunities and went into the first break 2 points down.
The second quarter once again saw the same tight contest, yet again we were unable to break Mayne down while they were able to better capitalise on their opportunities. Although our good pressure held them to quite a number of points in the quarter, they also managed to kick a few goals and go into the main break 13 points ahead. This was the best half of football we had played all season and involved a 22 man effort with everyone standing up. On the field there was great communication and the number of 1%’s had greatly increased on the previous weeks.
Coming out in the third quarter we knew that it would be important to keep the Tigers’ big guns quiet and out of the game. We were able to do this for a period and kicked a few quick goals in the process, taking us out to an 8 point lead midway through the third quarter. If we had been able to put one more goal on the board at this time, Mayne may have felt additional pressure and we may have been able to break the game open. However, Mayne was able to erode our small lead and went in at three quarter time ahead by 7 points.
The final quarter was always going to be a hard slog and it was going to be the team that had a couple of players stand up and take control of the game which would win. Whilst we worked hard and continued to push, Mayne had a couple of players who had been quiet for most of the game stand up and give them some good drive around the football. It was good to see that we didn’t quit and kept pushing until the final siren but it was too little too late with the final siren ending the game with Mayne 4 goals up.
We were unable to match our first half effort in the second half with a few players dropping off and having a lesser impact on the game. This needs to be fixed if we are to compete with opponents in the future as we need a consistent and balanced 22 man effort to get us over the line. There were a few good efforts across the four quarters with Rufy tagging well, Dyl working well out of the midfield and Sam working hard on the wing and half back. Chris stood up well across half back and lifted the team in the second half until he was cut down by injury.
Sandgate this weekend should be a good game and if we are able to bring a 4-quarter effort, we can put our first win on the board.

We showed up to the game on the weekend with the skills and ability to defeat Mayne however we did not show up with the confidence, among other things, to beat this team. I do not want to be too negative about the game; we are not stupid, we all know what we individually have to improve on and it's up to us to put our hand up and acknowledge to ourselves what we need to improve. The proposition by Bear that we should put ourselves in the performance group we think we deserve to be in, in my opinion, is a great strategy and it will be very interesting to see the results. However, it is not a time to be modest. I think it would be a good idea to have this implemented every week along with the coaches’ groupings and compare our performance.
As we ran out onto the scorching hot ground on the weekend there was no sense that we were ready to win a game of footy. With enthusiasm and energy levels low, this meant that only the skill level was the same. Determination to win a footy game cannot come from a few people who are able to pump up a team before every game. It certainly helps to have guys like that on our team but in the end, the determination must come from every player on our team.
The 1st Qtr saw some good efforts around the ground but we fell into the same rut we have in the past couple of games; not a good start at 23 to 9. This dampened our confidence even further but we are not known as a team that drops our head. We responded by matching Mayne in points in the 2nd Qtr and I feel we out-played them with some great plays going down forward.
The 3rd Qtr saw Mayne kick 5 goals to our 2 in a quarter where they didn’t miss many shots on goal despite the efforts of the backline. However, it was our complacency and continually looking to others to step up that let us down. Also our lack of discipline in this quarter may have been due to what we felt were some inconsistent decisions by match officials but we showed little resilience and self-discipline in dealing with the situation.
The 4th Qtr had some highlights that we could take away form the game. Locke was solid in defence and there were some great efforts around the ground by Adrian Wallin and Chris Collins. Darcy and Paul Bullock started to use the ball well and kicked long and fast into our forward line. In the end we won the last quarter by 3 goals to 2 but games are difficult to win with such poor starts. Consistency has not been our strong point so far and we will have to work on it.
Experienced players such as Lewie and Barnsey continue to help us young blokes out and we learn much from them but the only way we can show them that it's worth their time and effort is for all of us to give 100% every week.

The Pumas knew it was ‘do or die’ today with the loser relegated to the bottom of the ladder. The warm up wasn’t very good but we hit the ground well and kicked the first two goals of the game. Then Mayne settled and kicked the next two for the quarter. In the second andthird quarters we had more possession than they did but we couldn’t manage to put goals on the board in kicking 4 behinds to Mayne’s 6 or 7 goals. The last quarter was all about winning the quarter and that we did, kicking 5 goals to 1 goal. We showed in the last quarter we can score and score quickly but we have got to do this earlier in the game and put sides away.
We dominated the midfield battle all day but have to turn those Centre clearances into goals, lock the ball in after we have kick a point, boundary throw in or a ball up inside 50. The Backline has to be tighter but also the midfielders must run down with their opposite midfielder.
Thank you to the 4 Southport boys Reece, Nick, Chris and Jayden for helping us out. Thanks also to Nate who after playing a full game for the Under 16s came to help us out also and was among best on ground for us as well. There are good signs for the future if Nate keeps playing like that.

This weekend 19th May Sandgate host Springwood and the challenge for the Pumas will be to get back up after the disappointment of losses in matches seen prior as possible wins. This requires great resilience whereby the effort and enthusiasm has to again be replicated and be better than that of their opposition. Triple header this Saturday for Round 6 at Sandgate. Under 18 10.00 am, Reserves 12.00 pm & Seniors 2.00 pm.
