Round 7: 26.05.12
Springwood v Maroochydore
Mark Thompson reports on the Seniors’ match, Mark Hopkins reports on the Reserves’ big win and James Green praises the efforts of the Under 18s who met the top-of-the-table Roos.
SENIORS:
Round Seven was pencilled in as a win ever since the draw was released some months ago. Maroochy in the final game of the year last season ripped our hearts out and according to the coaching staff, the leadership group and the boys, revenge was on the menu. Although lately we have been on struggle street, statistically the Northshore Roos were in the same boat and a hard day at the office was always going to be on the cards. There was a sense of confidence amongst the playing group pre-game, and a belief that today we were going to notch up our first victory.
The Pumas missed vital early shots on goal and if it wasn't for some lucky umpiring decisions, probably would’ve gone into the quarter time huddle down on the scoreboard. Fortunately we went in with a two goal lead. We were amongst it early, running hard, talking, everyone was buzzing, and we were here to play. Maroochydore was also there to play and were every bit as good as the Pumas.
Half time saw us in the change room less than a goal down. The energy we took on the field earlier that day had slightly shifted, and a realisation this was going to be no cakewalk. Still we remained positive, the game was pretty much even and it was going to come down to who wanted it more. Getting smashed in the clearances, the midfield copped a well-deserved spray and took the field in the 3rd term with a do-or-die attitude.
Needless to say we died. Confidence, talk, belief, game plans all fell out the window as Maroochy ran away with the game with little resistance from the Pumas. Once they got a sniff, the Roos went on with it and at no stage were they going to lose. Their midfield tore us to shreds, their backs worked harder than our forwards and our backs had very little help. John Kennedy battled on up forward and played fairly well considering the delivery he had booting 3 goals, whilst Chris Venerman down back was superb, playing one of his best games for the club and taking a number of solid pack marks.
So on a day where there weren’t too many positives to take away from the game, the one thing that stood out was that after the game in the rooms, nothing needed to be said; we were hurting. We had let a genuine winning chance slip through our fingers. This year guys, we don’t have the ability to win a flag but what we do have is the ability to take a scalp. This week we will regroup on the track, embrace what we do have and on Saturday travel up the highway with Noosa in our sights.

RESERVES:
A slow start to season 2012 for the Reserves who really needed a win going into the weekend’s game.
The first quarter started off well with the Pumas kicking the first goal. With big Adrian Wallin playing at full forward, the Roos’ defence was always going to be stretched. The first quarter finished up with Springwood in front 4.2 to 2.2.
With coach Alan Phillips wanting more from the boys, the Pumas went out to strangle the Roos in the second quarter. After a hard fought quarter, the Pumas restricted the Roos to just 2 points and kicked 3 majors themselves to lead at half-time 7.4 to 2.4.
More effort and run was asked of the boys for the second half and they delivered booting a 3 goal to 1 third quarter to finish 10.6 to 3.4. With the game in the bag, the Pumas went out to impress the growing crowd that was gathering to watch the Seniors. With 3 last quarter goals by Johno Frazer and an unbelievable defensive effort by full back Daniel Schmidt, the Pumas ran out the game well, finishing with a winning score 15.11-101 – 3.6-24.

UNDER 18:
Round 7 saw the Under 18’s play their first twilight match for the season following the Reserves’ and Seniors’ matches. The game also saw the debut of Josh Ryan, a late inclusion due to the loss of Neal Collins in the warm up with a hamstring injury.
The Pumas drew first blood by scoring a behind in the opening minutes. The backline held up well even though it doesn’t look like it on the score board after Maroochydore kicked 7 goals to Springwood’s 1. The first quarter also saw Blake Pezzelato step up and play a sensational game before being concussed from a knock to his head. Sam Raymond had to also withdraw from the game with an ankle injury.
In the second quarter the Pumas showed some confidence, kicking their second goal and keeping Maroochydore to just 5 majors. Mitch Ramsay stepped up and Josh Rowe returned to the field after a spell late in the 1st quarter at the umpire’s discretion. The tempo in the game was building but the air temperature certainly wasn’t doing the same.
The Coach’s half time words were to go hard and take the game on and Josh Sciberras, Jared Isbel, Josh Rowe and Mathew Wallin certainly answered the call. Once again due to the defensive pressure applied by the Pumas, Maroochydore kicked just 9 behinds. At ¾ time Coach Doggs gave us one job and that was to keep the margin to below 100 pts.
The defensive pressure shown by Springwood in the final quarter once again reflected on the score board as Maroochydore kicked another 8 behinds in the final term. The quarter also saw the Pumas score their 3rd goal of the game.
The boys all know the things that we need to improve on. We played well considering the score the previous week. The biggest positive out of the game is that all the areas we need to improve on are areas that we as a team can improve on, but it all starts at training.
