Sandringham have kicked off 2012 with a thumping win in thier first practice match over the Box Hill Hawks in trying conditions at Trevor Barker Beach Oval today.
With 13 of the 25 players tasting Senior VFL Football for the first time it was an impressive outing, the Zebs kicked away early and were rarely troubled in the wet as they eased to a 93 point win in 4 x 25 minute quarters.
The Zebs went inside 50 on 58 occasions and young St Kilda rookie Sam Dunell and Chris Michaliades were the main contributors in front of goal with 3 each, Another Saints Rookie Jordan Staley snagged 2 while Tim Mavric, Adam Cockie, Myke Cook, Daniel Markworth, James Hallahan, Matt Stapleton, Michael Lourey, Sam Crocker, Danny Archer and Sam Maley all snagged one each.
Chris Irving was the major ball winner with 19 disposals (15 contested), he was well supported by Tom Curren and new Sandy recruit Adam Cockie who both impressed with 18 touches, 11 of Cockies possesions were contested and he also laid 6 tackles to go with his goal. Michael Sikora did the bulk of the ruckwork and had 23 tapouts.
With an average age of about 20 the young Zebs showed that they could certainly make some waves in 2012.
Coach Simon McPhee was happy with the win but also added that "we don't get any points for that win" it seems there are bigger fish to fry in the coming weeks.
