Match Report by Nick Ciantar
Top of the ladder Port Melbourne played 5th place Sandringham at North Port Oval on a sunny Saturday afternoon. A great game was expected and it did not let down. The Boroughs and Zebras both fielded near full strength teams and the Boroughs defeated a never say die Zebras team, 18.16:124 to 14.10:94.
Port Melbourne started the game with the attitude and intent that saw them undefeated in 2011. They kicked seven goals to Sandringham's two in the first quarter, with Dean Galea kicking two early majors. Two time Liston Trophy medalist Shane Valenti was tagged by Tom Curren. Curren kept Valenti to fewer than ten disposals for the entire game. The Boroughs piled on the goals and their intensity at the contest was far superior to that of Sandringham.
The second quarter was much different to the first. Sandringham stemmed the flow of goals and kept Port Melbourne goalless to the 26th minute mark. Sandringham lifted their intensity and changed a 33 point deficit to 8 at the main break.
The third quarter went goal for goal early on. The Boroughs held a firm grip on the contest, with John Baird (25 disposals and 6 tackles) and Sam Dwyer (22 disposals) being impressive in the midfield. Baird was a stand out for the entire game, being first at the ball and creating good forward movements through his clearance work. At the end of the quarter, the Boroughs finally managed to get two goals on the run to lead by 31 points.
Sandringham started the last quarter like Port Melbourne did in the first. They were first at the ball and showed it on the scoreboard. Sandringham kicked four unanswered goals in the first 15 minutes of play, to bring the margin to four points. They dominated the inside 50's and stopped the Boroughs’ goal flow. In a vital play of the match, Galea took a strong contested mark just outside 50. His kick for goal fell short, however in form ruckmen Wayde Skipper crumbed and goaled. This changed the momentum of the match and Port Melbourne kicked another three goals to record a 30 point victory.
Adrian Bonaddio was one of the Boroughs best with 16 hit outs and one goal. He was influential all over the ground and provided good clearance work for the Port Melbourne midfielders. In form forward Galea was held to three goals by Tom Simpkin, however he was influential in the last quarter, taking strong contested marks and setting up goals.
Myke Cook and Farren Ray again had standout games for Sandringham. Cook finished with 26 disposals and one goal, whilst Ray finished with 27 disposals and two goals. Beau Dowler was strong down back, finishing with 23 disposals and helped stem the flow of Boroughs goals in the 2nd and 3rd quarters.
Port Melbourne’s dominance in the first quarter saw them have control for the entire game. Sandringham kept on fighting, but could not get in front on the scoreboard when it mattered most. Port Melbourne plays Casey Scorpions at Casey Fields next Sunday in another top of the table clash, whilst Sandringham has the bye.
