HUNDREDS of pupils at a Newport school have been left without access to most of their sports equipment following an overnight robbery.
Newport Lakes Primary community liaison teacher Nola Wilson said the heist saw new footballs, soccer balls, basketballs, soft balls, cricket bats and hockey sticks among the items stolen from the school during the holidays.
Ms Wilson said the burglary happened on the night of Tuesday, September 21.
The missing goods were discovered by a teacher the next morning.
“The parents, teachers and students are all so disappointed,” Ms Wilson said.
“The parents’ club are always running functions to buy equipment for the school; it’s such hard work.
“It’s really disappointing to have this happen. We can’t really run our phys-ed and sports program the way we want to now.
“We’re just making do with what we have left and improvising.”
Ms Wilson said some of the 220 children - aged 5 to 12 - had offered to bring in their own sports equipment to help out.
The incident has also thrown the school’s involvement in the annual round-robin hockey tournament against other primary schools this week into disarray.
“We haven’t got our equipment to take so we’ll have to borrow it,” Ms Wilson said.
The school has issued a public plea in a bid to replace some or all of what has been lost.
“We’re desperately, desperately trying to save up Coles (Sports for School) vouchers,” Ms Wilson said.
“We would really welcome vouchers from anyone.
“If they could drop them into the school or in the school letterbox (on Elizabeth St); that would be great.
“Any offer of assistance would really be most welcome.”
