Many people have claimed that the 2011 team deserves to be recognised as the best ever Port Melbourne team. Not only did it go through the 2011 season undefeated, a feat never before recorded in the club's long history, but it won the premiership as a stand-alone team in a competition that favours aligned teams.
Peter Saultry & the Board of Management should be congratulated for sticking to its guns and choosing control of the club's destiny over the seemingly easier road of an alignment. The same can be said about Gary Ayres, who chose to coach the PMFC essentially because it was a stand-alone club. He never lost faith in his belief that a premiership was achievable and he was able through his personal conviction to convince his players that they could achieve football's version of the Holy Grail.
Terry Keenan's latest book, The Road Less Travelled - Port Melbourne Stands Alone, looks at PMFC and the wonderful undefeated premiership season of 2011.
Copies are available for purchase at $20 each through the club office.
