League Women -  Uni Rebels v Eagles

The Eagles won a nail-biting thriller against the Uni Rebels on Thursday night, winning 71-69 thanks to a two-pointer by Michelle Friel (12.3ppg) with only 19 seconds left in the contest. The Birds had built up what looked like a game winning 13-point advantage after an explosive 32 points in the third quarter gave them the lead. They had trailed 35-26 at halftime. Ieasha Friel (27.8ppg) led the third quarter attack with 14 of her game high 32 points while the Birds clamped down on the Rebels defensively, holding them to just 10 for the quarter. But in the last quarter the Rebels charged forward hitting 8pts to 2 in the first three and a half minutes as they began to chip away at the Eagle lead. By the 5:19 mark the Rebels were down by 11 at 66-55 and they then grabbed the momentum through Jasmyn Hewett and Tiayana Sing who almost got the Rebels over the line. Jaylene Bonson (15.3ppg) hit a basket with 48 seconds left to get the Rebels within 2 at 69-67 and Sing hit a pair of free throws with 24 seconds left to tie it up at 69 all before Michelle Friel quickly replied with the game winning basket. Faye Armstrong helped out with 13 for the Birds and M. Friel finished with 11. Hewett (12ppg) led the Rebels with 19, Danielle Ponter (12ppg) had 16 and Sing finished with 11.

League Men - Razzle Storm v Uni Rebels

The Uni Rebels didn’t hold back in their encounter with the Razzle Storm, thumping the Storm 90-44 to take a firmer grip on third place on the ladder. The Storm had no answer for the Rebel offensive onslaught. By half time the score was 54-15 with Tim Morris leading the way for the Rebels. Morris (28 @ 32.4ppg) got plenty of help along the way with Spencer Coleman (24.6ppg) hitting 18 and Travis Ellis 17. The Storm didn’t have a chance and with the addition of Travis Ellis to the Rebels offensive thrust the rest of the league may be put to the test come playoff time. Ellis has moved from the Tracy Village Jets camp and will continue to pursue a milestone that is within his grasp…that is to be the first player in DBA history to score 10,000pts. He is only 8pts shy. Brendan Dell (19ppg) shone for the Storm, but he was the only bright light for them with 21 points. A huge match-up next week for the Rebels as they take on the league leading Eagles!
