The Sandringham Dragons would like to send their condolences to family and friends of Ray ‘Slug’ Jordan.
Ray passed away on the 13th of August at the age of 75. During his early sporting years, Jordan was a player at Coburg and appeared in 96 VFA matches before retiring in 1962 to concentrate on cricket.Ray went on to be an Australian first-class cricketer who represented Victoria in the Sheffield Shield. He also toured with the Australian national cricket team.
He was also the leading under-19 coach of his day, particularly with Richmond and North Melbourne in the 1960s and '70s. He later coached Melbourne's reserves and during his career worked alongside coaching greats such as Tom Hafey at Richmond and Ron Barassi at North Melbourne and Melbourne. He also had a stint with Kevin Sheedy at Essendon.
Ray went on to become the Sandringham Dragons first coach in 1992, back when the Dragons were known as the Central Districts. He coached the Dragons for 6 years (1992 - 1997) and helped players such as Aaron Lord, Simon Beaumont, Simon Garlick reach the AFL.
Players will be wearing black armbands on the weekend to pay tribute to Ray and the crucial role he played in the development of the Sandringham Dragons program.
Funeral details are not confirmed as of yet, but it is expected to be held early next week in Richmond.
