In those famous words “What a BIG week it has been in Football….and Netball?”
“Four from Four” was the catch cry on Saturday Night with all teams being victorious on the weekend. And for the first time ever in our club, victories were had in all 3 football teams on the same day.
In what seemed like an eternity enduring the last weeks of training since returning after Christmas, the season finally got up and running and it all began on Friday Night with the Ladies Netball.
The “Burra Birds” set the scene with a trouncing of the Mernda girls, and with all due respect to Mernda, who obviously had a few beginners on their team, our girls really showed some promise.
Congratulations girls on an awesome start to the season and particular thanks to Hayley Giles for stepping up to be Netball Coordinator for the club.
FINAL SCORES: 42 TO 2

The 19’s welcomed in the new coach Shieldsy with a fantastic win over a new Under 19 team from South Morang. In a credible display form the young lions, who probably ran out of legs in the end, they found themselves ran over by a very disciplined team that shared the ball around magnificently.
I am sure Shieldsy is very proud of you guys, as is the whole club, but we have a long season ahead of ourselves and need to keep focused at the job at hand. Respect and Listen to your coach and the advice he offers you guys on this important learning curve both in life and in football.
We are very fortunate to have him onboard and his character and leadership qualities being precisely what you younger men can learn from and aspire to.

The Rezzies were up against the reigning Premiers and this was always going to be a test of where we are at for the start of the season - both from a fitness and from a team performance point of view. The boys got off to a great start under 2nd year Coach Phil Cattenazzi (One of the Three Oompa Loompas).
With a four goal to one first quarter you couldn’t ask for a better start especially against the wind. Schulzy was on fire and Shanie Derham was repelling everything that came his way.
By half time the boys had a 22 point lead after each had a go kicking with a 4 to 5 goal wind. South Morang came out more determined in the third and with the wind now about a 6 goal assist they kicked 4 goals to our 2 giving us a 1 goal lead heading into the last.
Again our fitness was telling as the 3rd quarter had run almost 40 minutes - whoever kicked against the wind in the last was going to find it pretty hard. This proved to be the case as we kicked 2.3.15 to 1 behind giving us an emphatic victory by 20 points. Schulzy, JB and Frankie kicked multiples with the Glove picking up BOG. Shanie D looks like one player who has made the transition to senior ranks look easy and I’m sure he will get more than his fair share of games in the ones this year. Great start to year fellas and a big change from last year.
FINAL SCORE: 10.5.65 to 6.9.45

BEST: S. Derham, W. Dinakis, J. Bedford, B. Snell, B. Schulz, P. Sita
After 2 games in the strong wind and heaps of time-on, the Senior game started about 25 minutes late. Unlike the 19’s and the Rezzies, we started with the wind which meant we needed to be in front at ¾ time to hold off a charge by the opposition in a gale force wind.
The first quarter we kicked 4.6.30 to 0.3.03 which was a pretty good start if we could hold them under that score when they had the wind next. The second quarter saw us only kick one behind but with a strong defensive group managed to hold them to 2 goals which saw us still 11 points up at half time.
In the third we wasted a lot of opportunities and only kicked 4 behinds to their 3 goals, and in what looked like the Lions spoiling our fun, they turned out 3 points in front at ¾ time.
In an amazing turn around (and with a little help from the weather gods) the wind that had blown so fiercely all day seemed to stop and had little bearing at all. This meant the rain wasn’t far away.
We started as perfectly as one would hope with 3 goals in the first 5 minutes, and with another one at about the 20 minute mark, the game looked like ours. We were up by 23 points but the Lions rallied with 3 late goals getting to within 5 points and all of a sudden, with the game now finishing in rain, the game was anyone’s.
But not to be denied, the boys hung on for a magnificent hard fought win to which Kym can be justifiably proud of, and with no disrespect to our Opposition, allows plenty of room still for improvement. With some more strength still sitting out the first game due to injury, the next game after the break can’t come quick enough. Well done for a great team effort boys with our mosquito fleet taking a hammering but proving you can’t keep good quality down.
