Not a great week in Footy on Saturday with 3 teams all going down - but our Netballers keep on keeping on.
Our Ladies began the weekend strongly again. They came focused and intent on continuing their fine form again for round 6. They didn’t disappoint, and with a 25 to 13 victory against a well drilled Thomastown B, their efforts were well rewarded. A great game to watch and one that tested our girls much more than the scores would indicate. Well done girls and good luck this week up against West Heidelberg (7.00pm).
You know your Saturday is not going to be a great one when one of the Committee calls you and asks “Which street do I turn down after the Pub?”. “What Pub?” I said. “Panton Hill” came back the answer. Trouble was we were playing at Home at Ford Park. His shall remain nameless but his initials are Steve Driscoll!
The 19’s also started off the day with some match day tardiness that transferred onto the field. What had started off the year as a relatively good attitude to game day has sunk into some disappointing episodes of self discipline. This is the big time now fellas and you must be focused on game day well before the bounce of the ball. Well done to Thomastown who showed what it takes to be focused from the time they arrived at the ground. Work hard on the track and bounce back this week.
Well it seemed the Two’s had been watching a bit too much of the 19’s before running out against Panton Hill. Again with such a strong list to choose from every week one might question why complacency has crept into your match day performance. Plenty of guys on the list each week missing games boys who would love to be out there. Make sure we all take your chances when presented to you otherwise the consequences will not be to anyone’s liking. Let’s turn it around this week.
The ones were up against a strong outfit in Panton Hill who were our inaugural hosts game 1 last year. That day didn’t end well getting a smashing off the Red Backs and a rude introduction into First Grade footy.
We had 4 goals on the board in the first quarter to 3 but the wind which had picked up gradually throughout the day was going to be telling if either side did not capitalize. The Hills kicked 4 with the wind in the 2nd but we managed only 2 against and so they went into the big break 10 points up. The game was a great encounter with scores close all day, and in the third, we managed just one goal with the wind, as did they kicking against it.
We turned into the last just 9 points down, and with the wind taking a bit of lull, we definitely were in with a real chance. The last quarter saw them quick 3 relatively quick goals that shifted the momentum well in their favor, and with us kicking 2 late goals, the damage was done with the Hillers running out 15 point victors in a hard fought game.
In a sense we can take a lot out of the game – we have improved decidedly in 12 short months. However the past is irrelevant when talking about the present. Lost opportunities during the day meant we might have been talking ourselves up instead of lamenting not seizing our opportunities when they arrive. This week against Reservoir is our chance to keep the year’s wins in the black and good luck this week in proving this to everyone - not least of all ourselves.
Getting “Back to the Burra” after each game is proving to be the place to be each Saturday Night to talk about the day’s events and for social chit chat and to watch footy on the Big Screen. We continue to see NEW people rock up each week including Parents, Friends and WAG’s coming down for the first time. Building a strong base on our already great Family Club is what it is all about folks so make sure you encourage all Family and Friends to come “Back to the Burra” whenever they can. Until next week…….
