The Gosford Wildcats have brought the Auburn GIANTS back to earth with a crushing 8 goal victory at Adcock Park.
Like something out of a George RR Martin novel, there has been a cold wind blowing from the North since Round 4, when the Wildcats just overcame Blacktown away from home. Since then, Gosford have grown to be a force to be reckoned with, and have convincingly dispatched the higher ranked UTS Shamrocks and Auburn GIANTS in successive matches.
The depleted GIANTS made the trip up the M1 missing several key players, including two late omissions in Ronya Rifai and Jessica Paulic. Early signs were good, as Auburn managed to keep the usually more accurate Gosford to 1.2 in the first quarter. However the GIANTS were unable to smash through the Wildcats defensive wall and failed to get a single inside 50 before half time.
The third quarter showed some promise for the GIANTS, with Sonia Ismail having brilliant shot on goal from 65m out that was touched on the line. Amna Karra-Hassan intercepted the kick-out that followed, and quickly passed to Hayat Ajaj, who marked strongly and converted for their only major of the game.
"Gosford's structures are solid and their execution is clinical", said Mandy Fung.
"They are a fantastic team to play, both for their positive and friendly attitude and outstanding football ability".
Mandy was pleased with the efforts of several GIANTS players, saying that there was constant effort during the match.
"We kept trying and were following the coach's instructions as best we could, even though they can be indecipherable. I think everyone put in a solid effort, and were especially well supported by the wily veteran Walae Chehade. But while she may be Harvey Spectre in a courtroom, she was unable to help us score on the field", Fung said.
Next week the GIANTS face the Penrith Ramettes in a make-up match for the washed out Round 3. No doubt Penrith will be keen to get revenge and win at home and help keep them in fifth spot.
