The Labour day long weekend resulted in a forfeited game by the Mid-Canterbury Eagles who were only able to manage 15 legitimate players and handed the Christchurch Bulldogs their second minor premiership on the trot. A match was put together with two Bulldogs players gallantly pulling on the opposition jumper as well as one or two players from the earlier match between the Eastern Blues and University Cougars.
Despite the nature of the game the Christchurch Bulldogs showed they weren't messing around and led the Eagles at halftime by a massive 93 points. With the game effectively over, the Bulldogs started experimenting with different positions and rested key players for the Grand Final two weeks later.
The end result showed that the Eagles hadn't lost any spirit and managed to stem the flow of goals, eventually losing 19.20.134 to 2.6.18.
Late bloomer Andre Posthuma kicked three goals early in the first quarter to continue his dominant form in the forward line, before being rested for the second half after copping a wayward boot to the ankle. Todd Andrews again enjoyed his time forward, managing five goals and securing the Bulldogs goal kicking award well ahead of any other player this season.
The win gives the minor premiers a week off to rest and prepare to face the winner of the preliminary final between the Eastern Blues and Mid-Canterbury Eagles.
Well done to all involved in another successful season, no matter what happens in the Grand Final we can hold our heads up as the best side in the competition for the season of 2014.
