The last Sunday round of the season ended in disappointment as the Eastern Blues again failed to get a full team together, allowing the Bulldogs to work on some important structures, safe in the knowledge that the points were secure.
An impressive display in the forward fifty meant that the Bulldogs scored healthily and accurately. In the end the superior numbers and cohesion of the ladder leaders was far too much, recording a 117 point win over their traditional rivals.
Anyone who has read a match report from this season will know of the imposing presence that has become Brad ‘Monster’ Mavor. Yet another big performance netted him another ‘Benny’s Barbers players player award after kicking a bag and being a constant forward target. Even his attempted kicks to team mates from sixty-five metres out ended up bouncing through for a major in a third quarter which saw him kick straight and true and help the boys to a massive nine goal third quarter.
Returning ex-captain Kyle ‘Wazza’ Smith enjoyed a stellar game in the midfield, having more kicks than Sam Burdett has nicknames and leaving a strong argument to include him back in the engine room for the remainder of the season.
Captains award for the week went to another regular mention, Kate ‘Locky’ McLaughlin for her tireless efforts (and leg cramp inducing chasing) around the ground. Locky has grown in confidence in her second season and is showing the young pups you don’t need to be the biggest to go hard at the footy.
Jamie ‘Grandpa’ Exeter again toiled dutifully in the ruck, contesting against more experienced players and holding his own.
The Sunday experiment to get more players appears to have failed or at the very least not made a difference for the struggling teams and will need to be looked at again by the CAFL committee for the following year.
All thoughts for the Bulldogs turn to the second leg of the Terry Anderson shield, looking to retain the trophy when they take on the University Cougars in the early 1130 game, providing enough time to watch the big event at the Redwood Hotel after.
