The Bulldogs were pushed all the way in their final clash against the Mid-Canterbury Eagles for the regular season. Windy conditions greeted both teams and were a huge factor in the resurgence of the Eagles in the third quarter after trailing by four goals at half time.
The race for top spot is virtually over after this victory, meaning a well-deserved minor premiership and extra week off for this young Bulldogs side will be the first step towards securing their first premiership since 2013.
Jake Skye-Tahu Thomson was in and under every contest, finding space and cutting the opposition to ribbons with ruthless efficiency.
Big Red Sammy Burdett crashed and bashed his way around at Full Back and craftily disguised a kick for touch without giving away a free kick.
Returning Co-Captain Dale Stevenson made his impact at Full Forward, again providing a solid forward target for attacking thrusts.
Player’s player was awarded to Kate ‘Locky’ McLaughlin for her continued hard work around the ball and strong marking. Locky also managed a vital last quarter goal to crush the dreams of her other half of leaving CAFL on a win against his second favourite club.
Jamie Exeter was recognised for his efforts in the ruck with the Benny’s Barbers award, possibly giving him a chance to dye out the greys in his dark Mediterranean style hair.
The eleven point victory came by way of 11.8.74 to 9.9.63, with an upcoming clash against the Eastern Blues the next hurdle for the ever improving Christchurch Bulldogs.
