Today sees the Hawks head down the Murray Valley Highway, to the home of the Purples. Since the Club’s last Weekender article, a fortnight ago due to the bye last week, we were informed of the news that one of Barooga’s most loyal supporters and life member, Ray Brooks, had taken gravely ill over in Spain. The latest news is that there has been marked improvement but Ray is still very ill. Although the signs are looking up, our prayers and thoughts are with Bev and the family, who have been part and parcel of the Hawks for the good part of 60 years.
Our lasting outing against the Eagles, which took place a couple of weeks ago, was anything but impressive. Only 1 win in the footy, coming in the shape of the U17s and one in the netball, in the U13s. Let’s hope for better outcomes today!!!
Seniors:
The game against the Eagles ended very disappointingly for the Hawks. A win was needed to keep the Hawks’ season alive and kicking but it was Echuca who dominated proceedings. After a very tight first quarter, where neither side could take the initiative away from the other, the contest turned into one way traffic after quarter time. The Eagles stole the ascendency away and the Hawks, no matter how hard they try, look a deflated side. Echuca went from strength to strength, leaving Barooga in their wake, extending the lead at every break until the final siren sounded to indicate the Hawks’ 7th defeat for the year. The bye meant that this was an 8 point game so we are in a fair bit of trouble, in terms of finals’ aspirations. With a home stretch of 8 games remaining, the Hawks can give it their best shot and have nothing to lose. Crappy, Hendo and Hydey once again flew the flag for the Hawks, trying to get them across the line. Captain Courageous, Rock Forsyth, had his best game for a number of weeks, whilst Rowdy and Clarkey played to the best of their ability. This week sees Ben Ryan, Dylan Brooks and Ryan Forsyth all pulling on their boots for their 50th 1st grade games for Barooga, well done boys let’s get another win on the board for these guys.
Reserves:
A fifteen minute burst of footy was the difference in the Reserves. With a late withdrawal from the Seniors and the injury to one of the U17s who was suppose to come up, Hazzard had to call on Dicky and Jono to fill the void. In a hotly contested first half, it was the Hawks who were first to drop off the pace and let the Eagles in for a couple of easy goals. Again in the 3rd, after dominating the first fifteen minutes, Barooga let the foot off the pedal and Echuca capitalised by slotting through a couple of goals at the end of this term. With the aid of a breeze in the last, the Hawks had enough footy going forward to give themselves every opportunity but unfortunately couldn’t prevail, going down by 25 points. Joffa put in another stellar performance, giving plenty of drive through the midfield and pushing down back. He was well supported by Mick C, Azza, Chimp, Jimmy and Jack Flanagan in his last game before heading overseas. The boys are still in the hunt so a good win today would definitely help their cause.
U17s:
In a fiery, no holds barred shoot out, the Hawks came out on top of the battle of the big birds. In a tight start to the game, it wasn’t until the 2nd quarter that Barooga were able to break the shackles enough to give themselves a match-winning lead. 19 points was the difference at the long break, whilst 18 points separated the two sides at the end of the game so the 2nd quarter proved the difference. First win for the boys against another of the competition’s finals’ aspirants so let’s hope this gives the necessary drive and belief to know they can match it with any of the other better sides in the comp. The Russell twins, Daniel and Jake, were magnificent for the entire 4 quarters and instrumental in the Hawks’ success. Artie came back from the 1’s and showed he was better off for the experience by dominating the contest, Simmy snuck home a solid bag of 6 bigguns, with Goughy and Tyson rounding off the best in a great team performance.
U14s:
The little champions of the club turned in a fantastic performance. They were right in the game up until half time. The young Eagles managed to give themselves enough breathing space to break away but the Hawks kept at them, only going down by 35 points. The boys should be really proud of their efforts and need to stick together as a collective group and finish the season off strongly. Jake Jenkins was sensational, slamming home 3 goals and leading from the front. Declan Brooks, Lachie Sutton, Keegan Brooks (first game of U14s), Marcus Evans and Ben Brooks all tried hard. This week sees Declan Brooks play his 50th U14 game, well done Declan.

Great team win. Defenders shut down the goal opportunities, allowing the mid court girls to feed our beautiful goalers who capitalised on this.

After a disappointing first quarter, defence begun to provide some opportunities and the goalers followed their shots in. With a few turnovers going our way, the result could have been a different story.

Started the same way as last week, got better as the game went on with the last quarter our best. Bridget & Kristie worked hard in defence.
So another day at the MFL/MNL office. Good luck to all the Hawks’ sides!!!!
