"Here Comes Norwood” from ‘The Outer Eye’
Norwood has the eyes of the EFL upon them after stirring home wins against previously unbeaten Vermont in both Seniors and Development matches at Mullum Reserve on Saturday., It was a real “red-letter" day for the club, taking two fantastic ‘scalps’ in important matches, with the U19s not disgraced either, narrowly losing to an equally strong Vermont Colts Squad. The seniors win was a vital one, and sends a message to our rivals that we are going to hunt down a finals berth with all our renowned fighting qualities. There' sure to be several EFL clubs just a little more nervous about their chances this year on the back of this effort.
The senior game exhibited all the traits of a classic Norwood performance. Tight in close, fantastic pressure, the opposition never having an inch of room to move. We scored the only two goals of the first quarter through Fingers and Blake Pearson (back from Port for this game) and at quarter time we held a 9 point lead 2.0 -0.3. In the 2nd term Vermont kicked the only 2 goals, whilst we missed a few gettable chances that could have built us a lead. At HT we trailed by the smallest of margins, 2.5 -2.6
Our 3rd quarter sowed the seeds of the victory, with 3 goals to zip - by 3/4T there had to this stage been no goals scored at the Mullum Rd end of the ground. We took a 17 point lead into the final change (5.6 - 2.7) but with Vermont kicking to what had been the scoring end, we were surely going to need at least a couple of goals to make sure of the game. Vermont kicked the first to reduce the lead to 11, but Justin Clarke with a clever snap replied to regain the 17 point lead. This was the first goal at this end of the ground for the game,. A Vermont goal reduced the lead but when Leigh Williams kicked his second for the game one after a nice pass from Pearso(playing a ripping game) it was back to 17points mid way through the quarter. A softish free gave Vermont another goal at the 18 minute mark, this one was getting tight. Pearso - quite deservedly, flashed into the play again for his 2nd goal to make the game safe, then Justin Clark nailed his 3rd, a lovely set shot from 40m, to completely ice the game. The siren sounded soon and Vermont kicked a goal after the siren, but it counted for nothing as this had been Norwoods day.
Final score: Norwood 9.8.62 (Clarke 3 Leroy 2 Pearson 2, Kreusser, Fingers 1) d Vermont 6.10.46
Best player on the ground was undoubtedly Blake Pearson with a complete game on the ball and up forward, capping his efforts off with two critical goals. Justin Clarke scored three vital majors in a solid game, Matt Aver returned to his best with a brilliant game on Vermonts dangerous forward Best, whilst Kreusser Fingers Alex Calder And Gibbo rounded out the best players.
