The game was played in great spirit which set the mode for a fun filled ladies day which was in aid of a even great cause. Both sides wore pink armbands and a pink Serrin replaced the normal red one as the players set out to raise awareness and money for local women suffering with cancer.
The weekends game also marked a milestone for club stall wart Wayne McQuillen with him playing his 40th match. It may not sound that impressive but when you only play 8 to 10 games a year it certainly worth celebrating.
The Warriors welcomed back Ryan Evans and he had an immediate impact in the middle giving the Wellington midfielders the first use of the ball and they made the most of it with the Warriors having a four goal lead at the end of the quarter. Frank Bertoli , Joe Pataki and Mick McQuillen were the goal scores.
To Geelong's credit the came out firing in the second quarter, this may of been due to the added inclusion of club president David Ross who changed teams at the start of the quarter to help bolster the numbers of the travelling team.
The Warriors back line lead by Ash Oldham, Marty Onley and James Slattery held back the early attached from Geelong and the home team started to transfer the ball from back to forward with skilful precision. Brett Morris and Gav Peatling were again great contributors and captain Kain Jackson was racking up possessions at will. At the main break the Warriors had a comfortable 6 goals lead.
The ladies luncheon was now in full swing and so were the Warriors with the home team controlling the tempo of the game as the continued to dominate in the middle and giving the forwards first use. Oldham had moved from defence to attached and was proving to be a major focal point as he kicked two of his own goals and setup another two. When Chris Peel ran into an open goal square and kicked the Warriors 12th goal the game was all but over.
The last quarter saw a full rotation of the onballers but the results were the same. When Jackson courageous took a mark running back with the flight of the ball in the goal square it toped off a wonderful individual effort and a overall team performance.
The final siren sounded and the Warriors 16.4.100 defeated Geelong 6.3.39
The off field success was just as great with all ladies enjoying a lovely afternoon and the club raising valuable funds. The Warriors are still raising funds for this cause with a Raffle which will be drawn on August 25th 2013. Tickets are available at some local stores and at the club's 80's fancy dress party on July 20th at the Sale Greyhounds.
