In beautiful condition the Wellington Warriors served up a convincing win against ladder leaders Melton.
Melton has had the wood over the Warriors for the past couple of season but the tables were turned last Sunday. The Warriors got off to a start that even Usain Bolt would of been proud of. Melton onballers struggled against the superior ruck work of Geoff Kinnish and the fast hand work of Col Knight as they clocked up multiple centre clearances which provided key forwards Health Brew and Aaron Bradley with goals scoring opportunities.
With their tails in the air the Warriors were proving very hard to stop as their hard running back liner of Joe Pataki and Troy Anderson dominated their more fancied opponents and sent the home team further in front. At the first break the home team had a very handing four goal lead.
Melton came out looking for redemption by trying to apply physical pressure to the fast moving Warriors outfit. It proved to be an unproductive tactic as they gave away multiple free kicks to the home team who were first to the ball. Dave Ross was also electric on the wing using his pace to find free space as he provided an attacking option going forward. When Greg Sage put out the ‘don’t argue’ fend off and dash forward hitting the hard leading Dave Reed on the chest it seem that the game was all but over by half time.
The high rotation policy of stand in coach Marc Stothers meant that the Warriors were still all fresh for the second half. The miraculous Reed brothers started the home team off with some forward line party tricks which added salt to the wounds of the away team.
Solid defenders Marty Garoni and James Slattery held of a series of Melton attacks before Joe Pataki dashed off half back and setting up another Warriors goal. By the end of the third quarter the home team could already taste the cold beers as the out played Melton side struggled to hold ground.
By the last quarter the sting had certainly gone from the game and the Warriors ran out the match as clear winners.
Final scores Warriors 12.6.78 to Melton 4.2.26
