The UNSW-ES Bulldogs got their 2014 campaign underway last weekend with all senior grades pitted against arch rivals UTS. After torrential rain during the week saw two games moved from Trumper Park to Mahoney Park, whilst Division Five and the Under 19's had their games postponed.
After Division's Four, Two and One all found themselves on the wrong end of the scoreboard the opening day of the 2014 season was threatening to be a whitewash against the UNSW-ES Bulldogs when the Premier Division guys found themselves down by 64-38 at the final break.
With momentum all the Bats way the faces on the dogs fans were grim. However, our guys summoned up every piece of energy they had and closed to within a goal half way through the final quarter. After an extended struggle UNSW-ES hit the lead with 8 minutes to go and were not headed again to take the points 9.15 (69) to 9.12 (66) and deliver new coach Dan Lynch a won on his dogs debut.
Leading the way for the dogs was David Batten who booted home two goals in the low scoring affair while Ryan Plant and Jeremy Kiel put in massive games as they always do.
In the lower grades Division One had a tough battle on their hands but stuck with UTS for the first half going into the main break down by the just the one goal.
After the break UTS got the jump on the dogs and only allowed our boys to put just the one kick between the big sticks as they ran away with the game 11.6 (72) – 4.5 (29). Coach Sean Fewings was impressed with the way his guys kept going and particularly with their tackling.
In a game where the margin mostly hovered between a 1-3 goal lead to UTS, Division Two were edged out 85-69 in one of the two games moved from Trumper Park to Mahoney Park.
The third quarter saw the dogs briefly capture the lead after being down by 20 points midway through the second quarter, but it was a 3 goal flurry to start the final quarter which was enough to bust the game wide open and leave our boys with too much work to peg their opponents back.
Donny's Division Four chargers were the first UNSW-ES team to open up their 2014 campaign and showed great determination for three quarters to stick with a strong UTS team and could have taken a lead at the final break if not for conceding the final five goals of the second quarter.
But the dream start to the 2014 season wasn't to be and the dogs were overrun in the final quarter as the bats ran in 6 goals to 1. The final score was 15.9 (99) – 8.5 (53).
The rain caused havoc with the entire round of Sydney AFL with Division Five and Under 19's having their games postponed to a later date.
