Last Sunday saw five UNSW-ES Bulldogs and Stingrays teams taking to the field to complete yet another ANZAC weekend. The Bulldogs had three teams venture west to Moorebank to take on the Magpies whilst both Stingrays team had home field advantage - Div One against Newtown and Div Two against Moorebank. In the end Div Four where the only victorious mens teams as Div Two and Five went down, however both Stingrays teams took home the points.
Div Two have yet to find their first win of the year and despite the comfortable 17.11 (113) - 9.7 (61) point final scoreline they made the home team work for the entire four quarters and didn't drop their heads. Rather than blow the Bulldogs off the park, the pies kep the scoreboard ticking over winning each quarter by 20, 6, 12 and 14 points respecitively. Timothy Cummins with 3 goals was best afield, whilst Stephan Whelan and Mark Bryan showed they are not having any trouble handling higher grade football.
Div Four won out in a tough battle against a Magpies outfit determined to take home their points of the season. Our boys held on to move up to third on the ladder with a 11.8 (74) - 9.5 (59) victory after leading 41-26 at half time. UNSW-ES took an early lead and managed to keep the opposition at arms length for the rest of the game as the margin drifted between 1 and 4 goals for the majority of the match.
Veteran Tim Dickson continued his brilliant start to the season with another dominant display in the midfield while Jack Griggs was influential. Stephen Ball kicked two goals in his second game for the club since returning from the 2012 Division Two grand final team. Overall it was another good performance that will keep coach Rider happy but knows there is a big game next week against Manly - a team which has produced some fiery match ups for Div Four over the last few years.
Div Five kicked off precedings at Rosedale Park on Sunday and coming off two impressive victories were hoping to cement their spot at the top of the ladder but were comfortably beaten 14.18 (102) - 7.12 (54) by the Magpies. The dogs were slow out of the blocks and found themselves down by 4 goals at quarter time which blew out to 62-18 at half time and the match was effectively killed against a contest. To the dogs credit they didn't let the margin blow right out and kept working to the end, and big man John Hook was rewarded with 6 goals.
The Div One Stingrays have continued their good early season form with another great defensive effort conceding just the one goal on the weekend to make it four conceded from their first two games. In wet conditions which made scoring difficult, the Stingers were comfortable 6.14 (50) - 1.2 (8) winners over Newtown. Melita Morriss was best afield while Mai Nguyen and Kyrsty Bishop kicked 2 goals each. Next week's clash with Sydney University is bound to be a cracker.
After some encouraging early performances the Div Two Stingrays got to sing the song for the first time ever at their third attempt. On a soaking Village Green they were 3.4 (22) - 0.8 (8) winners with Jasmie Smith, Shani Lauf and Bec Ling named best afield. Next week they'll have to bring their best against the undefeated Randwick City Angels but if they can get a win they'll move into the top half of the competition ladder.
Next week is the Suttons City Hyundai Ladies Day at the Village Green and the club will have 7 teams playing on the Saturday, including 4 at the VG. The VG action kicks off at 8.30am with Div Five against Camden before a tripler header with the Manly-Warringah Gaints playing Div Four (10.30am), Div Two (12.30pm) and Premier Division (2.30pm). The Stingrays Div One top of the ladder clash against Sydney Uni is at St Pauls at 8.30am, while Stingers Div Two is at 10.00 at Pioneer Park v Randwick City. The Under 19's also take to the field on Saturday taking on North Shore at Gore Hill Oval at 10.00am. The weekend finishes with Div One playing 2.00pm Sunday against Southern Power at the VG. There has been a lot of rain around lately so please keep an ear out for any venue and time changes.
