The Div Four Bulldogs had a big win over the weekend taking down reigning Div Five premiers Randwick City Saints by a massive 102 points in an impressive display at the Village Green last Saturday. Coming into the game there was not much known about the promoted team, and with results between the two clubs tracking fairly similarly over their opening five games it had potential danger written over it. But the dogs didn't show any complacency and took things on from the first bounce and took the points with their best all round display of the year.
The first quarter saw both teams attacking the ball ferociously and some big hits left a few bodies sore on both sides, but the overall class and quicker ball movement of the dogs worked at both ends with the backline able to repel the Saints forward thrusts whilst the forwards were getting the required delivery to allow them to put on the scoreboard pressure as they went to the first break up 28-7.
The Saints tired significantly during the second quarter and the Bulldogs were unrelenting. Scott Gentle was taking marks across the half back line at will, but the highlight of the quarter - and so far this season - was the dogs big man Sam Wheeler (pictured) landing three bombs from outside the circle within a five minute period, the last of which came off three steps inside the VG centre square. In all the dogs would put on 8 goals to 2 during the period to take an 80-20 lead at the main break and the game as a contest was over.
With the game over, the dogs still continued to push hard, although an unusually hot Autumn day started to kick in and bodies continued to tire. On top of this a few tempers flared and some minor scuffles broke out which ate into the game clock. Despite this the Bulldogs still kicked 9 second half games to 3, and walked away with a big percentage boost 141-39 win. Club stalwarts Dave Backler and Stephen Ball bagged 7 and 4 goals respectively, whilst Keiron Costello (half forward) and Matthew McRae (ruck and half forward) were excellent.
Next week is a huge game coming up Sydney University at Sydney Uni No 1 Oval. The Dogs sit 4-2 whilst Sydney Uni are 5-2 with a win to our boys enough to push them into a top three position.
