Congratulations to Nick Collins from Belconnen Magpies who was selected for a Mike Fitzpatrick Scholarship for 2010. Eleven scholarships were announced on 10th September by the AFL Players' Association.
Since 2001, the AFL Players' Association has awarded scholarships to assist young footballer's aged between 15 and 17 in their education and training whilst they aspire to an AFL career.
Nick is very honoured to be receiving his scholarship 'especially considering the players that have received it before me' Collins said. It entitles Nick to use up to $5000 towards school and football related expenses.
Nick has represented ACT on two occasions at the School Boys U/12's and U/15s and the ACT/Sth Coast Cats at the U/14, U/15 and U/16 level. Not only is Nick a talented player he also displays strong leadership skills and was rewarded by receiving the opportunity to captain both the U/15 and U/16 Cats teams and being selected as vice captain for his U/15 School Boys team.
This year Nick was selected in the ACT/NSW U/16 Rams side where he competed at the Australian Championships at Blacktown. ACT/NSW came second in this competition and have the opportunity to play QLD in the Grand Final to be held at the MCG on AFL Grand Final Day.
Looking forward into the future Nick's goals 'would definitely be to play first grade for the Belconnen Magpies and hopefully even one day break into the AFL.' Nick is well on his way to achieving both these goals and we look forward to following Nick throughout his football career.
Nick wishes to thank the club for all its support over the years. 'It's been greatly appreciated and I wouldn't be where I am now without the Magpies Football club.'
Please see the attached document for a list of scholarship holders and information regarding the scholarship.
