As if de ja vu is in the air, the Fiona Winter Realty Noosa Tigers went down by 4 goals aginst defending Premiers Mayne in Brisbane last Saturday. In what can only be described as a highly physical battle between two heavyweights of a very high standard of football it was the Brisbanes outfits' over all poise and skill that distinguished the two sides.
Once again it was their gun full forward Luke Faulkner who was the difference booting 7 goals in a best on ground display. However, according to senior assistant Brad Cross, the Sunshine Coast Tigers certainly had their chances. "In the end they kicked goals and made the most of their chances and we didn't. We had had plenty of easy shots on goal but missed and it was their overall skill across the entire ground that got them over the line. I couldn't knock our endeavour, it was a pretty fierce opening round contest that once again hopefully we can learn from", Cross said.
Senior coach James Gellie, who again at this time of the year is having his playing sabbatical, spoke brilliantly to the Noosa boys after the game stressing the work that continually needs to be done if the Tigers were going to challenge the best team in the comp. Noosas big name recruits certainly didn't let them down with ex Lions Brent Maloney and Robbie Copeland outstanding. Maloney attracted heaps of the ball throughout and even when moved forward looked as dangerous as any Noosa Tiger whilst Copeland continued his terrific pre season form with a dominant display off half back. Barwon Heads recruit Nick Hills was a great contributor for noosa with his attack on the footy and he gathered his fair share of the footy throughout whilst youngsters Jesse Malthouse and 16 year old debutant Corey Boardman showed why a strong and disciplined pre season counts for heaps come round one. A big congrats to Corey on a wonderfull debut with a football poise that is well beyond his years. Can`t wait to keep watching the likes of Boardman, Malthouse, Fitzpatrick and Rogers progress.
Final score: Mayne 14.7.91 defeated Noosa 9.11.65
Goal kickers: J Fulton (2(, P Harris (2), Boardman, Corrigan, Malthouse, McKittrick, Moloney
Best on Ground: B. Moloney, R. Copeland, C. Boardman, N. Hill, J. Malthouse
