Broadbeach V’s Western Magpies 12/07/09

Broadbeach hosted Western Magpies at home on Sunday hoping to reverse the end result of their last encounter.

The first quarter looked very promising with the boys starting off brilliantly. Kicking with the strong breeze they shared the ball around, winning it out of the centre and dominating all over the ground. This positive style of play saw them kick 5 goals 1, to 3 behinds  and 28 points up at the first break.

Quarter time scores

Broadbeach 5 : 1 – 31

Western Magpies 0 : 3 – 3

The Magpies looked a little more switched on in the second quarter. Broadbeach not finding it as easy to hit their targets and now not making good use of their first option as they had done in the first quarter. Some tight defence prevented the Magpies from doing too much damage and resulted in  both sides only managing to kick one major each. Broadbeach went in at Half Time still with a handy 22 point lead.

Half time scores

Broadbeach 6 : 3 -39

Western Magpies 2 : 5 – 17

The second half belonged to the Magpies who worked harder to win the ball. The Cats seemed to fall away and not show the same intensity they had in the first half. The strong breeze dropped which affected their wind advantage in the third quarter.

The quarter was dominated by the opposition who kicked 5 goals 1, to Broadbeachs’ 1 goal 4. Suddenly at Three quarter time it was a 1 point ball game.

Three Quarter time scores

Broadbeach 7 : 7 -49

Western Magpies 7 : 6 – 48

Unfortunately Broadbeach were outscored again in the final quarter which proved to be a real tussle. It was disappointing to see the Cats who had started off the game so well suffer an 8 point loss when the final siren sounded.

Full time scores

Broadbeach 8 : 8 – 56

Western Magpies 9 : 10 – 64

Goal Kickers: Adam Sinclair 3, Rhys Nossiter 2 and singles to Ryan Bower, Nick Sheehan and Steve Bugeja.

Best Players : Steve Bugeja, Rhys Nossiter, Ryan Bower, Matthew Heneker, Adam Oehlman and Blake Bantoff.

Thanks to all those who helped out on the day.
