The Magoos great win will leave us at fourth spot with a superior percentage to the Maggies also on 7 wins after their victory over Southport. Morningside knocked over Labrador leaving the Tigers and Aspley on 9 wins and Morningside on 8. Both Aspley and Morningside have poor percentages. Redland may get up to 7 wins after today’s round v Mt Gravatt. Bottom line is we have a crack at three of the sides in the running and we are eyeing off a top three spot.

The Seniors turned in a fairly ordinary performance, close to our worst for the season with the final stanza boring to the point of putting a glass eye to sleep. We were in it at three quarter time but the Hornets were coming off the business quarter with an 8 goal burst and ran away to record successive wins for the first time this season 15 12 102 to 9 14 68.

Seniors

Copeland lined up at full forward, Agosta found Tinker and Cloughy, as usual, was given the opposition gun in Mathews. We started well winning the clearance down to Declan Bevan who was awarded a free but he put in a Kernahan shot. Stewie, after a 5 week knee rest, went from penthouse to outhouse as he hobbled off one minute in. Fortunately he came back but he looked a bit proppy for the rest of the game. Fults looked a bit pacy for Evans as he led him to the ball off the foot of JD, and we anticipated a good day, but the ensuing point was an omen for the day.

The quarter was played mainly in our half and when the hornets did venture into their territory Rhino and Cookey were solid in defence. We had a few good build ups with potential assists to Simmo, Tinker, Hales and Cloughy but the return was less than a superannuation fund. Eventually Tink was awarded a free kick and ran on to slot our first. Cookey made a Dench clearance with Quicky on the end, across to Fifey, then Dick who found Hales for a goal. Tinker and Fifey were active with the latter snapping a major from a pack in the square. Tink won the resultant centre clearance and found Bev who used his ground knowledge (former Zilmere player) to kick a long left footer. At the break we were up 4 4 to 4 behinds.

The hornets lifted their work rate to claw their way back into the game. Neither side, however, was setting the world on fire. A heap of clean turnovers, missed targets, missed shots at goal and messy possession handball characterised the quarter. Maybe the wind was tricky but it seemed either the disposal was poor or the receivers failed to note the ball holding up. In amongst the revolving door that is the interchange bench, Hales and Hamish worked the forward line, Nathan Lyons was doing his bit, Bev who was now down the back end, Spud and Rhino repelled attacks, and Quicky and Cookey competed for the mark of the day while the usual jumper, Stewie, soccered one off the ground. Meanwhile the call was “…turnover in the middle, handball, pass, goal…” three times for them and not once for us. Forbes and Walker asserted their presence whereas Fults was getting pressure kicks from difficult angles to no avail. Off the ball, Mathews put in a mongrel punch to Cloughy’s comic cuts and a bit of feeling came into the game. Mathews was being soundly beaten and remained so for the day – appears his frustrations spilled over but without referee witness. The quarter fizzled out with Stewie entering rarified air and coming down without the nut, and Quicky and Ute Grant doing fetlocks. Half time Broadie led 5 5 to 3 8.

We needed to be a few up at the last break to have a realistic chance but unfortunately the third stanza was a clinic by the hornets on intensity lift. They slotted 8 to our 2. We had our moments but too few and far between. Stork was stout in defence, Tinker featured in an inspirational effort to assist to a Fults behind, the Dick positioned himself well for a hand ball receive off Hales, unfortunately for another behind. Fifey missed one after Hales and Bev had done the hard work and then there was 3 to go after Fults marked a Fitzy pass and kicked accurately. Fifey made good on a Simmo assist and then Tinker went down after an air shot behind in the square and did not appear again, but did look good arm in arm with Carly as she escorted him off. Hales had a set shot after a good catch from the kick in but was off line. Too much about us for it was the hornets’ quarter. They went to the huddle after a goal on the siren to extend their lead to 25 points coming home with the zephyr. Our heads were down. Us 7 10 to them 11 11.

Less said about the final period the better. Suffice to say that the hornets goaled within 18 seconds and followed with another within seconds – the fat lady sang loud and clear. Simmo picked up a sausage roll, Cloughy and Spud combined for a zilch result which deserved better, and Fults added another. Our only remaining interest was to see if he could reverse fortunes for the day and pick up a couple more to equal Ray Hughson. But with a sense of the dramatic he has left it for next week at home against Redlands. Final Score Aspley 15 12 102 def Broadbeach 9 14 68

Goals: Fife 2, Fulton 2, Zorko 1, Haley 1, Bevan 1, Stewart 1 and Russell 1

Best: Fife, Russell, Lyons, Bevan, Clough, Cooke

Magoos

The twos frightened us all in the first 10 minutes. A must win if we were to participate in the finals and the hornets had three on the board before we realised it was game on. We won the first 3 centre clearances through Price’s adeptness and courage but the sherrin followed a spiral return path to their goals on each occasion. The hornets had space and were playing the game without our permission. If not for Cloughy T and the Dogmeister it could’ve been a disaster. Then something clicked. A kid named McIvor (GC17), remember the name, started to pick up the pace of the game; Barney Nossiter goaled from a free kick, Taylor Green goaled from a mark at centre half forward, Twinny Hansen, Macca and Joel Wilko directed play with sure ball handling, and Spackers showed what was to come when he marked strongly from a centre clearance and goaled from 30m out. Quarter time 3 3 apiece.

While they won the second stanza on the scoreboard, we at least doubled their inside 50s and the smell of victory was in the air. Indeed we kicked 8 behinds for the quarter. Spackers started to present and his first effort was a spectacular leap and very hard landing. McIvor was taking advantage of Oehlman’s ruckwork and appeared everywhere delivering the ball off his very accurate left foot at pace. Unfortunately the benefactors, Joey Arnold, Cloughy, Webby, Adam Oehlman, Macca and Chook posted points. Taylor Green added another and Macca kicked his second for the quarter. Swinger was throwing his weight around and initiating combinations that should have been better rewarded. Unfortunately Greeny copped a good hit and there was plenty of claret about – he took no further part in the game. Half time: Broadie 3 11 to the hornets 5 4.

We kicked 8 again in the third stanza but this time they were goals. Harry Sleigh was in the ruck and Chand’s spray at the break had stuck. Spackers started the run on goal, McIvor was freed and received a 50m penalty to kick the second. Webby chipped in, then Searl combined with Wilko and Sleigh to allow Moss to pick up his first for the day. Spackers got his second with a ranging left footer 45 out and Mossy decided he would keep up with a deft soccer kick. Dan Skrinis started to recognise the football after a 13 week layoff and pumped the air conveyance into the hot spot on a number of occasions. The Dogmeister cleared with a long handball which ended up in with Sammy Edwards who used his non-swinging foot to goal 45 out on the wrong side on the boundary. McIvor fed Spackers, who was presenting with confidence, to finalise the avalanche. Broadie 11 12 to Aspley 7 9.

If we thought we were being unsociable in the third we were just plain arrogant in the final stanza. With McIvor running riot, the Chook backing him up, Swinger playing the iron man role, Cloughy doing what the Sons Of Dozer do, Skrinner relishing his return and the rampaging Spackers/Moss sharing the spoils, we added 10 goals 7 to 2 points. Spackers was thrilling in his leads and twisting aerial feats and Mossy was very clever around the goal mouth. Probably unfair to single players out when you have 17 scoring shots to 2 and it should be said that there were no passengers in the second half. Final score: Broadie 21 19 145 def Aspley 7 11 53 who just quietly were sitting second on the ladder. We have had their measure twice this season. Bring on the Tigers!

Goals: Spackman 6, Moss 6, Edwards 2, McIvor 2, and 1 each to Green, Nossiter, Webster, Hensby and Skrinis

Best: McIvor, Clough, Spackman, Price, Edwards, Hensby.
