Skilful Morningside half-back Jack Lawler has suffered a savage blow, breaking his leg against Labrador at Esplen Oval last weekend.
Lawler had been in career-best form and was being touted by people such as State captain David Lillico as worth a punt on an AFL club’s rookie list or as a mature age draftee.
The 22-year-old, originally from the Torres Strait, has produced a number of best afield performances in 2009 and was one of the last men cut from the State squad that played in Tasmania in June.
He suffered the nasty break early in the 94-point win over the Tigers, taking much of the gloss off the win for the Panthers.
While the Panthers have great depth, they will nonetheless miss the speed and silky left-foot delivery of the ball that Lawler provides.
