Match report - By Nick Ciantar
The Frankston Dolphins hosted the Sandringham Zebras at Frankston Oval on Sunday, with the Zebras winning in a nail biting finish. The Zebras had the ascendency all day though the Dolphins kept fighting, with the Zebras winning by six points. The final score was Frankston 13.8:86 to Sandringham 14.8:92. The game was a battle of the forward targets of Beau Wilkes for the Zebras and Khan Haretuku for the Dolphins.
Former St Kilda rookie Khan Haretuku started well for the Dolphins. He finished with four goals and 20 disposals and showed why he was named in the State team, by being one of the most influential players on the ground. He was matched up on Jackson Ferguson and he battled hard with him all day.
“We wanted to give him (Jackson Ferguson) first crack at him (Khan Haretuku)” said Sandringham Development Coach Brendan Allen.
Both teams battled hard in the first quarter, tough the Zebras edged out in front by 13 points at the first break. Beau Wilkes was strong down forward, creating contests and kicking two goals. Sandringham player (St Kilda rookie) Warrick Andreoli went off with a shoulder injury and played no further part in the game.
The second quarter saw it go goal for goal. The midfield of Sandringham started to get on top through Adam Cockie, Tom Ledger and Tom Curren. Cockie was best on ground with 28 disposals and 7 tackles. His influence helped the Zebras gain midfield supremacy.
“Tom Curren was really good. His legs and his pace is fantastic. Tom Ledger uses his legs and uses the football so well and sets us up a lot with his forward thrusts.”
Curren and Ledger both played well in the midfield and used their foot skills smartly. Curren kicked 2 goals and Ledger had 1 goal for the day. The second quarter will go down as the quarter which arguably had the mark of the year not paid. Frankston player Luke Clark rose higher than anyone else and ‘just’ fumbled the mark when landing.
The third quarter saw Sandringham jump out to a 33 point lead. It took nearly 15 minutes for the Dolphins to kick their first and then they managed to kick 4 in a row to bring the margin back to 8 points. The Zebras then took full advantage of the Dolphins turnovers, to kick 2 quick goals just before the siren to make the margin 20 points.
The start of the last quarter saw the Dolphins carefully manage their way around the Zebras zone, with Haretuku kicking the first goal. The Zebras responded quickly with goals from Curren and Archer. Kyle Martin set the Frankston crowd alight with a standout quarter. He kicked 3 goals to give the Dolphins some hope, though it was all for nothing with the Zebras prevailing.
For the Dolphins; Kyle Martin, Jackson Sketcher, Mitchell Bosward, Khan Haretuku and Corey Buchan were their best. Sketcher, Bosward and Buchan were the general’s down back, whilst Martin and Haretuku were solid up forward. Haretuku kicked 4 goals, Martin 3, Marusic and Calvert 2 each, Matheson and Hockey 1. For the Zebras; Wilkes kicked 5 goals, Minchington and Curren 2 each and Sikora, Stapleton, Peake, Archer and Ledger all had 1 goal.
“We can’t afford to let sides get back into games.. (we need to) play to our structures for a full game.”
The Zebras may have won, though they will be ruing that they did not finish how they would have liked to and will be looking at fixing this for next week. Frankston play Williamstown at home next Sunday, whilst Sandringham has Werribee away on Sunday.
