YM WINS MENS AHG LEAGUE GRAND FINAL

From Colin Howell:

At last another Premiership our 10th to follow 1964, 66, 68, 72, 75, 78, 85, 88 & 99.

Certainly not an easy win on the scoreboard or by the run of the play but we ended up scoring 3 and they only managed 2.

It was an odd game in that all 5 goals were scored in the 1st half and 3 of them came in the 1st 6 minutes of the match.

Wolves had the better of the 1st 10-15 minutes despite us scoring 1st from penalty corner variation in the 2nd minute. They then scored 2 field goals, the 1st in the 3rd minute after a great pass from the left sideline not far forward of the centreline to near the top of the circle where ex Australian player, Nathan Eglington picked it up and finished with neat flick over the advancing keeper, and the 2nd in the 6th minute when current Australian player, Mark Patterson beat a couple of defenders just outside the circle and then scored with a tomahawk low into the bottom left of the goal.

As the half went on we started to do better and better with all forwards making a number of intercepts and steals and overall had the better of the half. Both our goals came from direct corner hits by Mark Boyne - at about the 25 and 30 minute marks. Whilst corner counts aren't always a true reflection of the play they do tell a story and at half time while the score was 3-2 the corner count was 5-0.

The 2nd half was a different story and while the score remained at 3-2 the corner count was something like 1 to 7 or 8 in Wolves favour and they also missed a dubious penalty stroke by putting it high over the goals. We only had a couple of scoring opportunities hitting the post on one occasion and having our only corner saved on the line by the left post man.

Our Keeper, Tyler Lovell was fantastic during this period of the match making a number of excellent saves and he richly deserved the player of the match he won.

The YM crowd was very vocal in their support something very much appreciated by the players and this support was led by a group of ex-players from the 1999 Premiership team, who after a lunch together, came to the ground intent on helping the current group to their win.

All in all a great day
