BLOODS ON A ROLL

I think Adam was a pup the last time I was able to report three wins but that is what unfolded yesterday at McKinnon. While the U/19s won on forfeit, we still get the four points so that definitely counts!

The magoos got the day off to a great start with a comfortable win over Old Carey. Jake Muir (ne Mueller) led the way with five goals and proved a real focal point across the forward line. Sammy was also elusive down there while Al Johnston and Whitey were the generals, holding the backline together. New recruit 'Flemo' didn't take long to get amongst the action and was among the best players. Perhaps the most pleasing aspect of this result was the number of U/19 players who put their hand up to play yesterday. They got a good tatse of senior football and will be better for the experience. Well done boys.

So onto the big game and in some ways a danger game against the bottom side who have shown a bit of form of late. With the Oracle thawing out up north, I shall take the opportunity to expand a little more than normal. It was important to get off to a good start and conditions were only going to get worse. Led by Spencer Roberts and Frogga, this is exactly what the Magenta and Black did. We had four goals on the board without the ball getting onto Old Carey's forward line. Lille was dominating the centre bounces and everything was falling into place. The few times the ball ventured into the Carey forward line, Ferg and Stef were there to propel. So we went into the quarter time huddle feeling confident but wary.
The umpires had decided early that they weren't going to be paying any free kicks unless absolutely necessary and this made it easier for the visitors to stem the Bloods' tide. The second quarter was bereft of any real highlights as players were encouraged to literally dive on the ball so it became real grind. Carey got their first goal (I forget how) but of course we quickly answered with Loewy taking a strong grab and converting from the tightet of angles. These were the only two goals kicked for the quarter.
The third quarter opened in a similar vain as Carey tried to mount a comeback. They made much of the play in the first 10 minutes but were held up by our team of miserly backmen. The turning point probably came when one of their players was penalised for running too far which was brilliantly picked up by one supporter. The ball did go through for a "goal" but of course we got the ball onto our forward line and Case duly converted on the run. That appeared to deflate the Carey crew and the game opened up. Benny stepped up to take a couple of strong marks and the midfielders began to get cleaner possesssions. There were a couple of missed opprtunities to really put them away but we had our run back and that was probably the main thing.
We went into the last break with a ten goal lead so it was pretty fair the sting had gone out of the game. But the game was played out to the end with the boys wanting to send a message. Dave McKenzie was revelling in the conditions, while Hammer was still providing plenty of run off the half back line.
In the end it was a pretty convincing win. This now leaves us one game out of the four so next week's game is vital. Frogga and Hammer continued their fine seasons while Macca enjoyed the roaming. Obviusly the backline deserves a mention as they kept the opposition to only three goal - a good percentage booster.

In a day not conducive to high marking, it was difficult to find a standout.

BOQ Goal of the Day

The Bank of Queensland Goal of the Day goes to Hammer, D Brown, A Brown, Benny Hampton, A Brown, Vossy, A Brown, Loewey. I think that was the order of possessions in the last quarter which resulted in a goal - a great team effort.
