IMPORTANT NOTICE REGARDING SMOKING:
To keep with the program for a healthy environment for players and supporters alike, the Townsville City Lions are developing our SMOKE-FREE ENVIRONMENT POLICY, and are in the process of nominating an appropriate area for those who are addicted or just having a social puff whilst attending training, game days, or Club social activities.
The Townsville City Lions are committed to ensuring the health and safety of its patrons and members, and increasing the opportunity for enjoyment of games and functions within a smoke-free environment. The Club appreciates that smoking is your choice, however you are encouraged to respect that there are many members and supporters (children and adults alike) who may be subject to the poisons inherent in your second-hand smoke – which is NOT their choice. You are asked to comply with direction provided by the Committee on its Policy as we work toward a suitable resolution for all.
The specific direction for the Townsville City Lions is that we will conform to Queensland law by banning smoking in outdoor public places within 4 metres of non-residential building entrances – meaning that you are to undertake this activity in the Designated Smoking Area of the grounds.
These areas will be situated away from the Clubrooms, and away from seating areas and entry/exit points. Until the appropriate signage for Designated Smoking Areas is provided – and you are unsure where the areas are – please ask a Committee Member. You are also asked to dispose of your cigarette refuse in the appropriate manner in the bins provided for such a purpose.
Your cooperation in this important health matter will contribute to the quiet enjoyment of everyone involved at the Club, contributing to a cleaner, healthier Queensland.
Specific advice from the Queensland Government is provided below:
You may well be aware that in the current day smoking is prohibited in all pubs, clubs, restaurants and workplaces in Queensland, as well as in commercial outdoor eating and drinking areas and in outdoor public places (e.g., patrolled beaches, children's playground equipment, major sport stadiums and within 4 metres of non-residential building entrances). Since 1 July 2006, premises holding a hotel, club or casino liquor licence can designate up to 50% of the outdoor liquor licensed area as a smoking and drinking area. In this area no food or drink can be served, no food can be consumed, no entertainment can be offered and there must be no gaming machines provided. A "buffer", which can be either a 2 metre wide area or a 2.1 metre high screen that is impervious to smoke, must be on the area's perimeter wherever it is adjacent to other parts of the outdoor area usually accessed by patrons. Premises that choose to have such an area must have a smoking management plan for the premises that complies with legislative requirements. For all other liquor licensed premises, and non-liquor licensed premises, from 1 July 2006 there is no smoking at any outdoor eating or drinking place. In May 2009 it was announced that smoking in cars where children under the age of 16 are present was banned and that the power to regulate smoking at pedestrian malls and public transport waiting points such as bus stops, taxi ranks and ferry wharves was transferred to local government.
