Quake Women Just Miss Out

Saturday was Grand Final day at Dural and Quake’s Women’s team took on Vipers to see who would be crowned champions for the 2012/13 season. A brief report follows.

Grand Finals can have an effect on players and teams that are hard to predict. After absolutely smashing their opposition in the past 2 elimination finals would the girls come out firing or would the previous efforts take their toll? Would Steph’s absence dur to work commitments impact the team and if so could the girls find enough to fill that gap? If you looked at the half-time score of Quake 1-0 you’d think that the girls had carried the momentum into the game but the scored actually flattered the girls. If it wasn’t for Mel having a blinder in goals and the post coming to the rescue 3 times the girls would have been in serious trouble. As it was, they rode their luck and in their best 3 minutes of play they scored a nice goal to pinch the lead.

The start to the 2nd half was very even but a devastating 2 minute period sealed the girl’s fate when Vipers took advantage of some quick substitutions and scored 2 well taken goals. They then worked their backsides off to try and hold off the inevitable Quake comeback. Unfortunately, just as they had all the luck in the first half our girls had none in the dying minutes with 3 shots clipping the crossbar with the ‘keeper well beaten.

In the end you’d have to say that Quake weren’t as good as they had been in the earlier finals games and Vipers wanted it more. They deserved their win.

Bad luck girls but congratulations on a terrific effort in defending your title. We’re proud of you.
