Quake Vs. Majik Round 8 Review

Quake took on Enfield Rovers at Riverwood on Saturday and scored 16 valuable Club Championships through 5 wins, 1 draw and 3 losses. Brief reports follow.

Academy

This was a very good game to watch with both teams playing well structured, disciplined futsal. In the end the honours were shared and our boys put on a much better show than they did the last time they played against this very good Rovers team.

12 Boys lost 1-5 (Connor Hewit 1)

This result was a bit of a shock with our boys flying high at the top of the table and coming off a 10-1 win last week. Something just wasn’t quite right from the outset and the boys missed far too many chances. Give credit to Rovers – their ‘keeper was very good and they were clinical in front of goal. More work to do for the boys before they can safely wrap up the premiership

12 Girls won 2-1 (Amy Sayer 1 & Natalie Vukovic 1)

Playing a much improved Rovers side with just 2 subs was going to be tough and things got more difficult at the half with Natalie succumbing to the bug she had earlier in the week. At 1-1 and time running out to get a much needed win the girls were lifted by 2 brilliant saves by Karly. This gave them the spark they needed and Natalie picked herself up off the bench to go back on and score the winner with 2 minutes left to play. A good effort by the whole team.

14 Boys lost 3-8 (Riley Hinds 2 & Nathan Rapley 1)

The boys started brilliantly and caught Rovers off guard with 2 goals in the first 2 minutes. But it all went downhill from there and Rovers powered over the top of the lads. The only highlight after that was Nathan’s clearance kick sailing into the Rovers goal for a rare goal by a ‘keeper.

14 Girls - Sponsored by JR Electrical – won 1-0 (Ebony McCue-Shore 1)

We asked for more of the same after last week’s win and that’s exactly what we got. Good futsal, strong defence, solid ‘keeping but ordinary finishing. Most importantly though, it was another win. Nobody really stood out this week – this was just a very good team effort. Well done to Ebony for seizing the chance Rovers presented her with a poor cross court pass to score the only goal of the game. So girls, another win next week but with plenty more goals please.

16 Boys won 4-0 (Liam McGing 2, Anthony Haddad 1 & Marko Filipovic 1)

Rovers did well to keep with the boys and it took longer than usual for the lads to break the game open but eventually their class told and the score quickly went from 1-0 in the middle of the 2^nd half to 4-0 with a few minutes to play. There really are some quality players in this team and every one of them is getting better week-by-week. Well done lads – this win and Majik’s loss put you back on top of the table.

16 Girls - Sponsored by Macarthur Marble & Granite – lost 1-2 (Ash Norman 1)

Sport can be so cruel sometimes. The girls did not deserve to lose this game. This was their best performance over the past 2 years. Their defence was so solid that Rovers couldn’t even get a shot on goal until late in the game. Not long into the 2^nd half Ash picked the ball up on the half way after a turn over and she made no mistake to take a well-deserved lead. Rovers were rattled. But all the hard work in defence drained the girls and Rovers best player created 2 chances for herself and scored the equaliser with 3 minutes to go and then stole all 3 points with her second with just over a minute left on the clock. A cruel end to a magnificent game by our girls.

Youth drew 1-1 (Liam McGing 1)

The boys had to rely on a number of the 16 Boys to back up due to injuries and other commitments so, in the end, a draw wasn’t as bad a result as you would first think. Still, they could have, and probably should have, won the game. Well done to Liam for getting the goal – not bad for a kid who hasn’t turned 15 yet! The lads still sit 2^nd on the table with the best defensive record by far. Look out when they start taking their chances.

Women - Sponsored by Dunsheas United Realty – won 2-1 (Linda Dudek 1 & Elisha Williams 1)

This was another cracking game of women’s futsal. The girls were up for this game and worked their socks off. Linda Dudek was very good in her first game of futsal in 2 years and she scored the 1^st goal of the game. The girls then controlled the game but conceded not long after the break. This didn’t worry them though and they kept working to create chances and a Rovers turn over saw Quake break with numbers and they worked the ball beautifully to take the ‘keeper out of the equation and Elisha slid to put the goal into the empty net. The rest of the game saw some heart stopping moments ending with Dana catching a volleyed shot cleanly with 6 seconds left on the clock. The girls now sit 6 points clear at the top of the table

Men won 5-1 (Harley Da Silva 1, Shayne Ardle 1 Danny Martinez, Miles Downie 1 & Dean Lockhart 1)

As the list of goal scorers suggests this was a very good team effort against very dangerous opposition. Every goal was scored by a free man no more than a metre or 2 out from goal as a result of some very good passing and movement. The boys defence was very solid but there was some work to do in goals for Andy Haim who played very well again. The lads are now 3^rd on goal difference on the ladder and have the chance to take 2^nd spot from Boomerangs when we travel to Canberra next week.

Summary

Another good week’s work by the Club and the 16 points we earned consolidates our 3^rd place on the Club Championship ladder. We still have 7 teams in contention for the finals with our 12 Boys, 16 Boys and Women sitting on top of the ladder.

We have a big trip to Canberra next week. Give yourself plenty of time to travel and recover and let’s see if we can keep the momentum going.
