Courage, Pride, Respect
When we as a team developed these 3 Core Values at the start of the 2008 season we made a commitment to each other to adhere to them.
Last year we showed that when we stuck to these 3 core values, things seemed to flow along nicely.
We displayed courage most weeks with plenty of close games and gutsy wins. Pride was oozing from us as we turned up at each game proudly with our full uniform, and not once did a senior player step outside that line. Finally we showed respect for ourselves, our team mates, coaching staff and opposition on a weekly basis.
Everyone knew the boundaries and what would happen to those who chose not to abide by them.
These 3 core values underpin what Robinvale is all about. If we are to be successful we all need to be onboard with these values, from the water runners through to the President.
We need to set the bar high and be continuingly looking for improvement all of the time. We should not expect anything less, to do so would deny ourselves the opportunity to be the very best we can be.
We can never be satisfied with doing something unless it is done with our absolute 100% effort.
There are many facets of our club that I believe need improving. To be blunt, there are many of us who simply are not giving their all and not living and breathing our 3 core values.
Like the last quarter against Irymple on the weekend, going against our game plan and challenging coaching staff's decisions - not good enough. This will not be tolerated.
This kind of behaviour has no place at our club and is total disregard toward our core values.
The moment one person fails to play their role for the team and fit in with the team's plans is the first sign of a weak link in our chain.
Being involved with the RFNC means you are a team player. You do whatever it takes to make the team and club a better place. By being in this team environment everything you do has a ripple effect and will not only affect yourself as an individual but many more people and most importantly it will be a reflection on the club, your club.
It is everyones responsibility to hold each and every person involved with the club accountable to their position.
As coach I constantly ask myself, how can I improve? How can I make this club better? Is this in the best interests of the team/club?
In 2006 I represented Queensland in the Australian Country Championships. One of the matches I sat the entire game out on the bench. All the coach said to me after the game was, "it wasn't your day today". I was furious! I wanted to quit, walk away etc. it was very embarrassing; I had lots of family there.
That night we had a team function and we had our final match the following day. I had a lot of support from my team mates and stuck it through for them and the team. The next day I was selected to play in the forward pocket, I played the entire game, kicked 12 goals and the rest is history. If it wasn't for my team mates reminding me that it wasn't about me but the team, I probably would have done the easy thing, told the coach what I thought of him and walked away.
To this day I still don't know why I didn't get a run. For whatever reason the coach had his plan and I wasn't a part of it. I didn't agree with him, but I respected his decision and in the end I thought I got my just rewards.
In comparison to last year, we have a better side. We have good tall targets, great smalls and some quality young kids coming up through the ranks.
In my opinion we have a side that can rival any other team in the competition. We have the talent and personal to be very successful.
Success demands and expects commitment from each other, striving for excellence, and respect for oneself and each other.
